My first thought when I read my own post was: "what about patronage?" But of course corporate control of an artist's catalog goes far beyond traditional patronage. Money can serve art, but can art serve money?

Breaking the system depends upon individual artists like Aimee Mann and Matt Johnson. Like the comics industry in the 80s, stubborn creators can break the system and find new ways of distributing work.
