Wow. Looks like Barb really does wear the pants at the Bush ranch.

Or at least she holds the day planner.

Is there something there I should be upset or care about? 'Cause I don't see it.

I love behind-the-scenes. Thanks for the fascinating glimpse at the schmoozing process we all know usually works itself out away from view. Seems a fairly innocuous charity event, but the underlying theme of subtle and not-so-subtle access to the powerful really shines clear. Thanks again.

There is A LOT more footage like this in two films: Feed by Kevin Rafferty and James Ridgeway and Spin [imdb] by Brian Springer.

It was great seeing how Larry buttered them up on-air just before he laid the question on 'em too...

It's comforting to know that the POTUS blows off social affairs the same way I do...have the wife make something up.

the...potus? President of the United States? Because...like...dude...you know that wasn't...

Gee...Larry King's a whore. Who knew?

Good to know that the Bushes will be flown out to that dinner and taken care of if they want to attend. Because they're probably hard up for airfare.

What was with the post blow grimace? It looked like he was angry at his snot.

That was some funny ass grimacing right there.

jikel_morten,
POTUS always seemed a little pompous to me too, and unneccessary in this case as the FPP said "Bush", so you can safely just say, "President" and we'll know what country you mean.
posted by Sangermaine at 8:35 PM on June 1, 2005

Thanks Sangermaine. I honestly couldn't tell what Baby_Balrog was getting at. I think the first and only time I've heard it was on the west wing...

Does anyone remember this gem? Bob Dole speaking his mind when he thought they had already gone to the clip. Good "During-the-commercial" fun

At least he talks to his guests, apparently Johnny Carson would just sit there and not say a word until the show started back up again.
posted by monofonik at 8:47 PM on June 1, 2005

I'm still perplexed as to what I was called out about. POTUS=Pomposity=Canadian? Did you think I thought that was W?

Oh well, what do you think was in Larry King's nose that he had to blow it? He couldn't possibly still be producing mucus so long after death.

Thanks for the Spin link.

monofonik, Carson also smoked profusely during breaks and even when the camera panned off of him.
posted by Monochrome at 9:15 PM on June 1, 2005

That was quite underwhelming.

If King's being a whore here, I don't see it. He was asking them to speak at a charity dinner. And gee, I blow my nose too.

POTUS is not really pompous, but it is pretentious.
posted by grouse at 2:23 AM on June 2, 2005

Actually, what baby_balrog was pointing out is that that's not the President of the United States in the video, which makes all of your comments sort of perplexing.

Really, does anyone check the link before posting? Anyone at all?

Actually, I just remembered that you Americans still call your ex-leaders "President". Which is totally weird. But my apologies.

Actually, I just remembered that you Americans still call your ex-leaders "President". Which is totally weird.

Actually, according to protocol, only the sitting president of the United States may be referred to as "Mr. President" or "Mr. Vice President." Former presidents are properly referred to by the last title they held before becoming president; e.g., Governor Clinton, Ambassador Bush, etc.

But apparently almost no one does this.
posted by chuq at 1:34 PM on June 2, 2005

Yes. That was what I was getting at.

I was vaguely poking fun at you for claiming the man on the tape was W, instead of his progenitor.
In order to make fun of you, I affiliated you with a group of individual commonly ostracized in my home state of Michigan, namely, the Canadians.
So, in effect, I was saying,
"The only possible way you could believe that individual to be the sitting president of the United States is if you are, in fact, Canadian."

I was also sloppy drunk on scotch when I posted that.

So, in retrospect, I would like to add that in common parlance former presidents are still referred to as "President," and the fine people of Canada probably know more about U.S. politicians than the politically dull people who populate this country.

I like Canada, and I'm sorry if I've contributed to the defamation of this great nation.
