Dr. Doom Is Gangsta.

I don't mean to be a front-page-post nazi, but I'm sort of failing to see what's interesting about the fact that Doctor Doom owns a chalice. Let alone what's interesting about some random forum's thread about how Doctor Doom owns a chalice. I mean, other than as an excuse for us all to make the obligatory Viktor Vaughn jokes.

I thought you were talking about Kool Keith. I like the post anyway.

The Lil John Geek pic further down the page on the link was worth the FPP price of admission IMHO.

Those Olsen Twins should do a remake of The Dark Crystal.

This is what comes of re-opening MeFi user registration, sadly. Lame, uninteresting, single-link posts. To a forum thread no less. Detailing a half-hearted attempt to suggest a rather optimistically humorous link between a cartoon character's use of a jeweled chalice and the current already pretty well played out trend of pimp cups?

Harrumph. I liked it better when MeFi was a semi-walled-off, old school internet fifedom. Even if I wasn't allowed in, the signal-to-noise ratio was a lot better.

Yeah, yeah, the good old days. When people were free to be megalomaniacs and try to tell the rest of us what to like. And if it appealed to an interest that you didn't share, it sucked.

Maybe your time would be better spent watching "Murder, She Wrote" reruns.

Well, I was amused.

Indeed it is sad that we got a bunch of whiners joining.

Having never noticed or thought about it, what is up with that chalice and how do the contents get past Doom's mask. And the other forum's comments are amusing.

The oldest as well as some of the best posts on MetaFilter have been single-link posts.

Wait, sfslim, are you serious? If so, you're going to be pleasantly disappointed as things go along.

Vik Von would probably be a great MeFi poster.

Yes, yes. The good old days when mefi was ruled by flautists.

I don't mind the FPP, personally. But I have found out that, in the intersection of comic-book geek and hip-hop, my sense of humor fails entirely to function. I might as well be trying to unpack a page of Slovenian humor.

I may just be old and out of touch. You kids.

While I enjoyed it when I saw it the first time on TCJ's message boards, I appreciated seeing it again. Thanks, Guy!

As for the haters... you know, not everything on Metafilter is aimed at you. There are plenty of comics (and ex-comics) geeks here that appreciate this kind of link. If you don't like it, flag it; don't ruin the comments by whining about how great MeFi was in the olden days before you joined seven months ago.

Any FPP that makes fun of Dr. Doom is okay by me. If sfslim had his way, MeFi would be a living TOOOOOMB!

I thought this was pretty funny, especially the first picture. And the Li'l Jon in high school was worth the price of admission alone. If that yearbook photo is any indication of what nerds can become, Metafilter is going to be producing a hell of a lot of hip hop superstars.

Only dorks like Richards would post on metafilter...

Doom is dope with his Krunk Chalice. Holla!

[Speaking of lame, uninteresting posts...]

I've been out of touch with Fantagraphics for too long, I guess - didn't know Gary Groth and Kim Thompson had started a new blog and that Art School Confidential was being made into a movie. Thanks for pointing me to the TCJ site again.

I know that sounded snarky, but I meant it honestly. As a mini AskMe thread: I'm a fogey and don't get it, the "culture-jamming" part especially. Perhaps some generous person can explain it to me.

Yes. We should have stopped at 2012.

Seriously people, flag it and move on. If you're really offended meta is there for you, otherwise shut up.

I found it funny.

Don't sweat it, argybarg; neilkod is misusing the term "culture jamming." Or at least is using it in a much broader, looser way than I've seen elsewhere. Culture jamming usually involves some kind of attempt to make a political point or disrupt certain annoying cultural messages. This is just a fun juxtaposition for laughs.

So, um, anyone know where I can find a high res scan of that first cover?
posted by Grod at 4:57 PM on June 19, 2005

neilkod. using terms in a much broader, looser way since 1971.

Maybe genre-bending was more appropriate? I always thought culture jamming covered this type of thing, i.e. crunked-out evil Latverians.
