Web Tapestry, Cheap Names, Areti Internet Ltd. ... These are just a few of the UK based web hosts I have discovered while trying to find one for myself.

My question to any UK residents is: which UK web host do you use/would you recommend? The well known ISPs (Direct Connection for example) are extortionate.

It depends on the intended use. I use www.portland.co.uk for my personal site, and have been happy with the free service, but the bandwidth available is not all that great.

Arachsys have a good reputation: a friend uses them. I use Black Cat Networks, which is small, personal and personable. And it does the trick.

Okay, some requirements:
I need 50 Mb space, min 1Gb bandwidth and SSI.
Any more thoughts?
Come on Meg, Tom and the rest: I want answers, mister...

I have used Globalgold in the past and heartily recommend them. Perhaps not the cheapest hosting service in the world, but the staff are very friendly and efficient.

I faced this very same decision a couple of months ago, and realised that for value hosting (reasonable price with an extensive feature-set), I'd have to look at the US hosting market. I now host with a US web host and can reccommend HostingMatters. The only UK host that comes anywhere even close (for value) is HotChilli. But you get much better service for your pound if you use a credit card and host in the US.

I use a company called fasthosts. For £500 per year they give you unlimited space, bandwidth, ftp accounts, e-mail accounts, and even domains (you have to pay the cost for the domain of course).

Sometimes they go down, but it's excellent for the price. I have a few clients on my account that pay for it for me!

Areti are a good choice too, by the way. I've known the guy who runs it for several years. They don't offer anything like Fasthosts (yet) but really excel when it comes to service. They really know how to treat their customers.

Heya. Sorry for the delay! Actually both Meg and I, after getting advice from people like Matt Haughey and Prol are now hosted by http://www.pair.com - an American company. They have a really good range of packages, cheap webspace and bandwidth, and decent add-ons. THe only thing they don't have is a decent inbuilt stats package. Hope that's helpful!
