Places and spaces is an exhibit which aims to compare and contrast the first maps of our entire planet with the first maps of all of science as we know it.

I like the octagonal map but think of it with edges identified so it becomes a two-holed torus world.
I also quite like the "Complete & Perfect Map Describing the Whole World."

Ah, this is fantastic. There's nothing geekier than maps. ::glee:: Too bad they're not coming to Boston with their exhibit. Maybe I'll have to wait for them to go to DC. I was kind of hoping for a display that was a little less like a high school science fair, but I guess it's the content of the maps that counts.

This one was very interesting, and mapping out the relationships between various scientific disciplines is a neat idea. The method seems like it might be fraught with some troubles--for example, the choice of what disciplines would make it onto the map at all. There are too many disciplines and subdisciplines to make an accurate map, so what gets excluded and why?

It reminded me somewhat of the map of programming languages throughout history [PDF]. Neat stuff.

Does anybody remember seeing a map of what the United States would look like if the country had been carved up along the European model, and a corresponding map showing what Europe would look like if it had followed the US model (lots of big rectangles, etc.)?
