Kodo's Earth Celebration has come to an end. Kodo is a world famous drumming group that specializes in traditional taiko drumming. This year's guest to the three day festival, celebrating music, art, and culture, was Galacia born, Spanish bag-pipe player Carlos Nuñez. The festival is held in Ogi town on Sado Island, Japan.

Couldn't help it, but "Kodo's Earth Celebration" made me think of this.

Thanks for the links, snwod. I love taiko drumming. I live in San Francisco, home of the first taiko dojo in the United States. Though they were around before, I first heard them in mid-80s. You can read some more about them here. When I was younger, I actually considered taking their classes, which are open to everyone.

I took my daughter to see a performance by these guys at the National Gallery of Art in DC. They were in the soaring atrium of the east wing, under the giant Calder mobile. The echo of the drums was truly impressive.

At one point, the drummers played more and more quietly, until they were barely touching the drums at all. It was a very spooky effect, and the crowd was absolutely silent, until my three-year-old girl announced “Daddy, I’m done! I’m done!” We quickly left, but, actually, I think it was the aimed-for reaction.
