Post-Katrina satellite images are now available on Google Maps. Click 'satellite' to see the before. Here's Superdome. Here's Highway 610 disappearing into the water, abandoned cars littering it. via Google Sightseeing.

Argh! My mother's house is STILL a blurry splotch. Satellites suck.

Actually, this is aerial photos. Satellites would suck even more.

I'm aware, I realized that as soon as I had posted the damn thing, but what can you do. I'll admit that my brain is not exactly at it's finest these days.

That highway going into the water... I'd use the word spectacular if it wasn't so chilling.

I think this has already been mentioned somewhere in one (or more) of the many threads concerning Katrina.

If using Google Earth, zoom in close, tilt about 45 degrees, enable building, then toggle the overlays.

I couldn't fully imagine the flooding until I did that.

Is this a broached levee?

some chick: that is the industrial canal, it flooded the lower 9th ward.

It is a "breeched" levee - on the Industrial Canal about 1 1/2 to 2 miles from my (perhaps former) home. It appears that the water is flowing back out of that neighborhood - Lower Ninth/Holy Cross - into the canal.

Thanks, dhartung. My sinuses, now juice filled, will sureley love you forever.

(and it looks like the situation has become so bad that it's devolved into a huge game of Tetris)

I'm not sure what the distinction between satellite images and aerial photos are; but why is you think these are not satellite images, please?

Goblindegook writes "I think this has already been mentioned somewhere in one (or more) of the many threads concerning Katrina."

Yeah, I pointed it out here, resisting the urge to start a new thread (although I had come to the Blue to point it out, having seen it mentioned on digg.com)... Really, lots of threads just makes it harder to keep abreast of what's really happening - and I've already seen people cut 'n pasting word-for-word responses into at least two seperate threads...
