"What did you do to my Intelligent Synthesizer?" Wonderful collection of DIY sound gizmos from Mike Walters at Mystery Circuits. Includes the Pena-Tron, the Electronic Earthball and detailed instructions for the Moog Source Membrane Switch Cure. Most recent: The Melloman, a hilariously elliptical DIY Mellotron. Very interesting. Now I know what to do with my Fender-Rhodes Chroma Polaris when the membrane switches go bad.

My god, this (extremely endearing) picture of him at age 16, jamming in his basement, reminds me so much of my boyfriend. Our apartment is gradually accumulating a vast army of synths... I shall definitely have to show this page to him.

ah, mediareport, you beat me to it!

mike walters is part of a wider "circuit-bending" community which apparently has conventions of some sort. he's also in a very cool band, Jett Rink.

Is there any sort of flash version of these instruments, just to fool around with?

Heh. It was too neat to wait, even after I read the listserv message that the Melloman had made BoingBoing. I'd have hated it if the rest of Mike's site had slipped through the cracks here because of that.
