New Yorkers Are Prepared for the Apocalypse. Or are we? A fascinating article from New York Magazine that looks at what New York City's government, hospitals and other assistance centers have done to prepare for disasters, what we've spent too much attention and money on (terrorism) and too little (possible epidemics).
Sidebars: When Bad Things Happen: "A short guide to nine big things to worry about—and what you can do about them.", How are New Yorkers coping with the fear du jour: Avian Flu? and The Geography of Disaster: A map of hurricane and earthquake evacuation centers, as well as major trauma centers (hospitals) and fault lines. Shows evacuation routes and zones in case of a variety of disasters, including at the Indian Point Nuclear Power Plant.

"We have less accountability in place on the issue of preparedness than we have for making ice cream"

Wonderful, zarq. Thanks for reminding me of the threat of sudden death that hangs over the head of me and my loved ones at all times.

Is is wrong that my first thought was, "Well, if there's another disaster, on the bright side, maybe the real estate prices will finally come down"?

To prepare for a disaster or plague, my friends and I have been stocking up on provisions. We're planning on sealing ourselves up in an abbey, allowing no one to enter or leave, and having a huge, decadant masquerade ball.

I hope they put the emergency command center in a building that won't fall down, this time.

Why would should we bother to plan for anything that happens after the Rapture?
