3quarksdaily. Just another blog, sure, but a good one. 3quarksdaily is a filter blog much like our very own, but with only 15 users (and an editor). As they say on their about page "On this website, my guest authors and editors and I hope to present interesting items from around the web on a daily basis, in the areas of science, design, literature, current affairs, art, and anything else we deem inherently fascinating." The do an admirable job.

I know that generally, the idea is to post interesting stuff that I find from other blogs here and attribute them with a via. But 3quarksdaily is just so damn interesting so consistently, I feel bad not giving it it's own props and sharing the love. Also, "The do an admirable job" is exactly what I meant.

Thank you. This is an incredibly fascinating, well-thought website.

I've been reading 3quarksdaily since it began, and the quality of the posts and links has indeed always been consistently high. It's always the first feed I read in Bloglines.

Damn fine website. Bookmarked. Thank you. This is what "best of the web" is all about.

And "admirable" is too lukewarm. The site design is lush, inviting, yet still functional. The writing is superb. The topics are engrossing. Top notch.

If MetaFilter is "more addictive than crack", 3quarksdaily is the some of finest uncut Bolivian flake available.

In the U.S./India cancer comparision table, it states that there are 12 cases of Liver Cancer per million but 13 deaths. Something like that would not get under the radar here.

Heh. Fair enough. My honest opinion (which I try to sprinkle in lightly with FPPs), 3quarksdaily is fucking fantastic. It does collaborative weblog better than anyone else. It's comparable to some (including MeFi) but nothing comes close to being as consistently engaging, thoughtful and beautiful. And the design is great to boot. I'm quite addicted. I rage on occasion actually. I robbed a lady the other day so I could get the smack. Then I found out that even though it's addictive like crack, unlike crack, robbing people isn't a solution to withdrawls.

"Best of the web" material. Brilliant, in fact. Factual, unbiased and informative. Truly excellent.

Double post alert. There are two regarding Dubai architecture. Hence I thus posit: suXXorz!

3quarksdaily: "if the printing of such trash as this be not felt as an insult on the public taste, we are afraid it cannot be insulted"

Okay, got that out of my system. Thanks, panoptican!

Yeah, but we have 20K users to thier 12. I bet they don't have any trolls.

If you are implying that quality goes down as participation goes up . . . I'm here to agree with you.

So manyh blogs. So little time.

I like this.

Design? People still go to websites? All I ever see is the feeds these days- when I go to sites I am shocked by the design changes.

Yeah, but we have 20K users to their 12. I bet they don't have any trolls.

They probably also won't have the diversity of opinions, expert dropins, drama, personalities and coke through the nose funny comments.

spock, Not really. MetaFilter FPPs has consistantly higher quality than Slashdot FPPs. Quality has more to do with silencing worthlessness, one of the major selling points of wikis.

I want to see a wikified blog with the following two features:

1) A workable system of etiquette for editing others comments, i.e. spellchecking, improving people's jokes, etc. Essentially duplicate comments should be deleted.

2) Purpose tags, like <informative>, <insightful>, <opinion>, <argue>, <worthless>, <funny>, etc., which people could use to customize their view. For example, high quality trolling might be permitted, but only inside <troll> </troll> tags, which many would disable.

You could have advanced templates for structuring comments, replies, debates, wisecracks, etc., and perhaps replace talk pages with <editorial> </editorial> blocks.

Anything that starts off with near death experiences is 99% likely to have me hooked permanently. Also likely to catch my attention: the word "quark." It's a funny word and physics is awesome.

That is to say, this is a greatly awesome site that I will be checking in on diligently. Thanks!

3quarksdaily has been at the top of my pile of feeds for yonks - it always manages to point me towards things I didn't know I'd be interested in, but am. If that makes any sense.

with only 15 users (and an editor)...srboisvert says, I too would miss the comics, cranks, and misfits.

Thankfully there is room for two blogs in this world.

How could "The do an admirable job" be exactly what you meant? I hate to be a moron, but didn't you mean "they"? (It wouldn't be Metafilter without at least one snarky comment.)

Loved the site by the way. Thanks.
