www.milliondollarhomepage.com puts kid through college... and then some. Add this to the "why didn't I think of that" list.

Add this to the "why didn't I think of that" list.

That's ok, we already did that for you! :)

Saw this back when he only had a handful of tiny ads up... never thought he'd make it this far. Then again, getting written up in the WSJ doesn't hurt.

Hmmm... a search on the URL didn't reveal it as a double. Sorry.

Witty- so did the auto-doublepost thing not find it when you previewed?

I knew this would come up again once he got close to selling all the ad space. :)

Witty: "Hmmm... a search on the URL didn't reveal it as a double. Sorry."

A URL search is a good place to start, but you could have searched for the words "million dollar homepage" and it's the first hit.

Didn't even know there was such a thing... so if it did, I didn't notice. I previewed to make sure it "looked" right and that the links worked... then posted.

In the past, I always would search for the URL as a sure-fire way to make sure it hadn't been posted before. But that doesn't seem to work anymore. I searched for:

http://www.milliondollarhomepage.com
http://milliondollarhomepage.com
www.milliondollarhomepage.com
milliondollarhomepage.com

If a link to any one of those had ever been posted, a search would say so. But I guess that was the old MeFi search, not the Google-style. So, my fault.

See, this, for me, doesn't fall under the "why didn't I think of that" list. I did think of it, and dismissed it as completely loony. Even now I can't see how the idea worked. I'm skeptical that he actually pulled in a million dollars -- or even a hundred thousand dollars, despite his claims that he has. Or maybe the world is just a little weirder than I thought it was. After all, Golden Palace is willing to pay thousands of dollars for a grilled cheese sandwich....

There should be a link for deleted posts. The comments on why they're deleted are the best part.

Dear people who insist on writing "Pepsi Blue" at the slightest provocation - it is not always appropriate to do so. It's about as annoying as the misuse of "godwin!" and it really does make you look a little silly.

Why don't you just start the $500,000 home page and undercut him?

That's exactly what I thought! It's been done, though.

Someone already did, strangeLDT. There are also a number of $100,000 web pages. I also have my doubts that any of those sites made much money; many of those sites gave away a lot of space to boost interest. Also, surely bandwidth isn't free yet, so it's not like Million Dollar Boy and his imitators had no expenses.

I, like about a hundred other people, started a clone of this page (link in my diary if you're interested) at reduced prices (penny/pixel in my case). I made about $90US on it, enough to cover my hosting for a bit. That was an immediate but small influx of cash for ~2 hours work, and no one has contacted me for quite a while since.

Damn, I just started the $5 home page. I am a business visionary and king hell futurist.

*checks bandwidth usage, compares it to monthly cap*

Uh. Oh fuck. Damn. Shit.

When you think about it, MeFi is the 150,000 dollar homepage. Sort of.
