Cities is a cross between Urban Dead and Kingdom of Loathing.

I liked urbad dead, but not long after MeFi posted about it, it slowed down so signficantly, and often you couldn't log on, so I gave up. Maybe this is a good reminder for me to get back into it.

From the character creation page:
If we detect more that two accounts using the same IP address, all accounts using that address may be deleted!
Better hope your school or workplace doesn't report all outgoing connections as coming from the firewall. Better hope DHCP never recycles your ip address to anybody who happens to play.

Man! KoL! Totally forgot about that.

We should totally start a MeFite Clan in KOL, if there isn't one already.

I played.

As you can see, not for long.

Lacks much of the instant-gratification-awesomeness of KoL.

I liked urban dead, but it took me about two weeks to max out the character for both human and zombie skills. Then it got kinda boring....

I was playing Urban Dead for a while, but once you get all the skills for both Humans and Zombies you are a bit too god like for the game to be fun. I guess discussing urban dead in a post about cities is off-topic.

Urban Dead had some issues where too many people were massing in one location causing the database to slow way down, I think most of those problems have been fixed.
posted by Mercaptan at 3:31 PM on January 16, 2006

the problems haven't been fixed at Urban Dead well enough for me to return anytime soon... using up your 50 action points took half an hour... just don't have that kind of patience... KOL was the same way (haven't been back since, so it may have improved)

Here's hoping Cities doesn't fall victim to the same problems...

KoL just went through some major server upgrades, as well as adding a metric assload of new content. It's even more stick-figuriffic than it was before.

All you KoL-playing MeFites should join the Sock Monkey Mafia. It's a great clan, or so they say.

Gee thanks, I missed KoL last time around. I respectfully request present and future life back.

Urban Dead was fun for a while, then got boring when I had maxed out characters (although the idea of slowly implementing new features kept things from getting stale somewhat). The meta gaming was neat for a while, though. The slow server was definitely a disincentive. Yep, the server is still molasses slow.

Will probably give cities a shot, thanks ChasFile!

There's a MeFi/MoFi Urban Dead team - Los Monos - currently helping defend Giddings Mall. Email me if you want in. Server isn't too bad at the moment - Kevan changed the way large groups are displayed which has helped a lot.

I still play Urban Dead. But mostly the game has become a matter of routine: A) find where the zombies are massing, B) join their clan, C) break down any barricades the humans have errected, D) get inside and kill any humans I can. And E) when the humans are all dead or escaped, the cycle starts again. B-O-R-I-N-G.

And yet still I play.

Usually once a day.

Urban Dead gets addictive with all the meta gaming, and taunting. I have a zombie on the mall tour right now.
The trick to avoid server lag, is to not logon in primetime (US evening).
posted by Pink Fuzzy Bunny at 11:12 PM on January 16, 2006

From the 'mall tour' link: Mall Tour isn't about claiming credit for mall attacks - it's just about attacking more malls.

I think I'll just stick to my boring old zombie routine. :)

I'm just surviving as a level 15 scientist in Urban Dead...

Play it pretty much daily, reviving filthy Zs day in and day out.
I've avoided joining a group of people so far. But the Zs are getting smarter and appearing in larger groups by the day...

Despite the fact the UD *should* be boring, the metagame really is fascinating. In particular, the zombie language and hordes that have been built up are very impressive. To them, I say BARHAH!

UD became boring, so I found a replacement. Outbreak, which is rather like a grid-mapped MMORPG version of DOOM for a web browser. It's offline at the moment while the author upgrades it. Oh, and it has no action points.

Um, you are the author of Outbreak, NLindstrom. Remember?
