Nagin has definitely gone a bit crazy at some point. I don't know enough about him to know if it was before, during or after the hurricanes, but he's clearly lost it.

I'm curious when's the next chance for the citizens of N.O. to ditch him, and if they'll choose to do so. Personally, I'm leary of leaders who hear voices.
posted by I Love Tacos at 12:57 PM on January 17, 2006

I saw his speech on CNN and didn't think it was anything close to a melt down. I think there is some real concern that a lot of people won't be returning to the city and that a disproportionate number of those not returning will be black. I expect this particularly concerns some people that Nagen depends upon for support and the speech was meant to reassure them that their concerns are his concerns. The bonus is that if what he says rubs certain people (the "Man" or possibly the "White Man") the wrong way those he is trying to comfort will like it that much more. The people he pisses off wouldn't vote for him anyway.

Ascribing ANYTHING to God pretty much undermines any argument you were trying to make. God doesn't do shit. He allows stuff to happen but rarely can he be bothered to get up off his couch and actually do something.

The reason is because he doesn't exist. HAHAHAHAHA.

so why care about the color?!
what the difference it makes?

At the end of the day, you are not judged by your color, you are judged by how you live your life and what value / contribution you've made to this world...

I think we better create a better life for ourselves and spend quality time with our family & friends, instead of fighting over this endless stupid color war

During the speech Monday, Nagin, who is black, said that the hurricanes that hit the nation in quick succession were a sign of God’s anger toward the United States and toward black communities, too, for their violence and infighting. He also said, “It’s time for us to rebuild New Orleans — the one that should be a chocolate New Orleans.”

This was huge for the .0001% of us running Lynx.

Mayor C. Ray Nagin
Mayor’s Office
1300 Perdido, Room 2E04
New Orleans, LA 70112

(I thought his "chocolate" comment was fairly funny, myself. Not funny as in "yeah, you right" but funny as in "I know you didn't!")
posted by ColdChef at 3:19 PM on January 17, 2006

It just drives me nuts when everyone comments on something before they know all the facts. It becomes very clear with a little information.

Nagin was a Republican who changed parties in order to run for mayor in New Orleans. Because a Republican has about as much chance of becoming mayor of New Orleans as I do. He was brought into office on the white, rich, suburban vote. Just because you change the letter after your title doesn't mean you change who you are. It just proves to me that he will say what he thinks it will take to be re-elected.

I don't know about y'all, but this kind of makes me happy. The whites are screaming at the blacks again, the blacks are screaming at the whites, everyone's angry at Uptowners, the Uptowners are angry at everyone else, it's back to neighborhood vs. neighborhood again, people are finally at each other's throats again. Second-line shootings are back. People are probably back to bitching about how slow and inconsistent the streetcars are. Too bad the Catholics and the Protestants aren't fighting against each other, too.

For what it's worth, Nagin specifies that chocolate means dark cocoa mixed with white milk. He seems to be more guilty on this front of an awful metaphor than overt racism.

That being said, he still Pat Robertson crazy for believing that this was God's wrath. You build a city below sea level in the path of hurricanes and one day a hurricane is going to flood it. God, if he existed, would just need to stand by and laugh.
posted by Joey Michaels at 4:52 PM on January 17, 2006

New Orleans and LA aren't quite as simple about race as the rest of the US. Nagin is a New Orleans Creole... a category that isn't really White or Black by the entrenched "One Drop of Blood" standards of the rest of the US.

And they don't come more uptown than him. Millionaire Republican until two weeks before the last mayoral election. Still... after watching his Republican idols screw him over, leave his city to waste, and debate whether to rebuild or not, I can see why he would become a bit embittered about what Dick Cheney and Halliburton have in store for New Orleans' future.

Yes, quite possibly post traumatic stress disorder.

I think there is some real concern that a lot of people won't be returning to the city and that a disproportionate number of those not returning will be black.

Now why would that be? And how about some links to such statements/concerns.

That really is a loaded statement. I would love to know its source (if it has one other than your opinion).
Maybe there is an inference in there? Try replacing the word black at the end of sentence with "welfare recipient."

Seriously, if that initial statement is in print somewhere, please link it. I would love to see the context of the article it came from and who said it.

As for Nagin, his 15 minutes are up and he should be off the stage soon.

It's my opinion based upon what I've seen on the news and what I've heard from my many relatives who live in the New Orleans area. That's why the statement began with the words "I think".

My "guess" is that you could probably replace the word "black" with the word "poor" and it would be just as accurate.

Why the hell does it have to be PSTD?

Honestly, I swear, I live in a different country than everyone I know. I thought the guy was riffing on a standard meme employed by black American politicians trying to reach the thousands of members of his constituency who are currently abaft on the Wal-Mart sea and bunking in Arkansas or Seattle.

The nearly monolithic media consensus I watched develop today (Nagin's NUTS! And he's GOT RELIGION!) does not reflect the speech I heard.

God help New Orleans and if Ray Nagin's the man to do the helping help him to. Help whoever the fuck is willing to fight for the place because if it's just Vegas East or Diisney World West, if there's no place for wildness and foreigness and sin and cheats and hustlers and drunks and insane levee projects that must be counted as proof of American hubris, then that is IT for this fucking country, because New Orleans gave this country its' soul and heart and imagination and beat. The day New Orleans is sane and plays by the same rules as the rest oof the USA is the day the country as a whole may be declared over.

Fuck. And fuckity fuck fuck.

CunningL - Thanks for doing the leg work I was to lazy to do.

Because the conditions in some of the hardest hit neighborhoods were so poor even before the hurricanes some also suspect that a number of those who left will have no desire to return. If you have ever been in some of the neighborhoods behind the French Quarter, just north of Rampart St., you'd understand why. Relocation to any place outside of the worst third world slum would be an improvement.
