Growing Up Sexually

Growing Up Sexually There is an outfit called Growing Up Sexually and on their website there were two pictures discussed one showed a boy taking a shower in cow urine (NSFW). Cow urine is more sanitary than water in some parts of the world. The other showed what looked like a sexual act on a cow but in actuality young boys perform cunnilingus (NSFW) on cattle to stimulate mating. Be glad that you live in the culture that you live in, others are not as fortunate as you

What kind of food do you "search for" in a cow's anus anyway? I take it there's no pizza in there, so why not just come clean and say he's 'sucking shit' from a cow's anus? Also why not just eat the shit on the ground, and save the return on your effort? Or why not just eat the grass the cows eating (because I doubt it becomes more nutritious once the cow digests it)? I'm pretty sure the input tastes better too. Or, here's an idea, why not just eat the fucking cow!

The best question, though, seeing as how this post was basically a deceptive practical joke to put up a stupid picture of a nonwhite person eating from a cow's ass (ha ha ha. Farktastic!), and the main link contains absolutely nothing of interest, why hasn't this been deleted yet?

“namblafilter”
says the “incest guy

From GUS:
...
In which way are curricula presented as necessity and how are (necessary) curricula subverted and transgressed? For instance, how are bodies reduced to curricula, thus governed or disciplined by them? Also, how does curriculum figure as a contemporary paradigm for societal control of stratified bodies?
...
In answering these questions, we need to address hegemonic and historical discourses about pleasure as taught, educated, learned; as sex play vs first/serious sex (notionally, rehearsive vs real sex) and familiar curricular ideas about sexual derivation, inauguration, substitution, seduction.
...
So there is anthropological well as political utility in an effort to try and digest materials as a field (rather than an instrumental dimension).

“Be glad that you live in the culture that you live in, others are not as fortunate as you”

See, given the subject matter of GUS, I think klangklangston
is on to something with the ethnocentric call out.

Apparently the idea is to address ethnographic and ethnological aspects of “sexual”/gender/erotic/bodily “development”, during childhood and early adolescence using ethnogeographic, topical, and bibliographic schemes.

As opposed to showing kids engaging in animal husbandry and showering in urine as confirmation of nationalism or some sort of cultural or disconfirmative bias.

....of course I actually read the fucking thing.

And it sounds interesting to me. The ethnographic index is a fascinating read. I had no idea who the !Ko bushmen were much less that they extensively instruct girls on marital life after menarche and pretty much ignore the boys on instruction in sexual matters.

How does my being offended by the fact that this is how bad things are for that child, and others, equate to All people should act like Westerners!" This is okay just because it's a 'different culture'? Frankly, I'm pretty sure that this is disturbing for anyone in any culture. But, hey, you can call it ethnocentrism if it makes you feel better.

Smedleyman, if you read further you will find that these photos may have been captioned wrongly for specific purposes. As I understand it the photos were taken to show poverty at some of it's worst.

Seems like some people just want to be so open-minded that they accept, literally, anything and everything as being okay, 'cause it's, ya know, different and from a different culture and since that's the case, how dare we make any sort of judgement call. If we do we must be ethnocentric.

“Can you seriously not see the difference?”
- codeofconduct

Looks like the kid is starving to me. The photo is being used however in the GUS site which is about sexuality.
(And I used the qualifier “apparently” - because the link is to biafra)

And I was addressing your point only tangentially (as opposed to directly addressing halekon’s comment - not that given how klangklangston’s comment was linked to yours it’s not a reasonable assumption to make on your part
)

And I was agreeing with you that if your point is that it’s wrong for the kid to be starving and without water and eating cow ass to survive that it is indeed wrong and thus not ethnocentric. The kid shouldn’t have to do that.

However if this is ADDITIONALLY one of the means by which the kid learns about biology instead of the traditional western school “birds and bees” then that is something that needs to be studied and is not at all subject to a value judgement. It’s just data.

Where’s the problem?

“Some people just want to be so open-minded that they accept, literally, anything and everything as being okay.” -codeofconduct

I agree that cannabalism is wrong. Apparently though eating cow ass and showing in urine is one of the things these people have to do to survive. I agree that that sucks and they shouldn’t have to do that. I’m not making a moral or ethnic assertion. The study is sexuality, and - like amish kids - this is one way they learn about sexuality in general. It’s data. Neutral. It becomes a non-neutral culture issue when someone says “Be glad that you live in the CULTURE that you live in...” and misses the point of this study.
Nothing against halekon who I’m sure is a nice person who meant something more along the lines of “be glad your not poor and have to suffer this way” but used the term culture which opened a whole unfortunate can of worms in the thread that I felt had to be addressed otherwise I wouldn’t have commented.
No offense to you either, codeofconduct .

----

Now...you or anyone else want to fight with me for no reason?

Smedleyman: “Ok, I respect your point.”
Whoeverfilter: “Fuck you, what the fuck you know?”

‘Cause I’m getting pretty tired of taking shit for being reasonable when other people are making snidecommentsfilter and I’d love to beat the living shit out of someone.

The ethnographic index is a fascinating read.

I may be a bit rash here but what it looks like to me is a collection of scattered and largely outdated anecdotes mixing different eras together, with a preference for picking the most backwards extremes. Try and click on the entries for countries/populations you know well and see for yourself.

Plus the fact the author picked up those two photographs as symbolic of something to do with sexuality also tells me something, and it's not exactly "credibility inspiring", even it's a university project.

(The actualy source is Nomachi, A. K. (phot., 1989) The Nile. Hong Kong: Odyssey. 1990 Dutch translation, Langs de Oevers van de Nijl, p45 where it is stated that "young boys are seen performing cunnilingus on cattle
to stimulate mating" (as cited in GUS II, ch.8).)

From what that says anyway.

Most of the images from GUS appear to be less controversial.

So I'd give it more credibility than the cow photos would at first glance remove. Said credibility which is instantly taken away with the "music for growing up sexually" part of the study.

I like the bird, but WTF?

“the fact the author picked up those two photographs as symbolic of something to do with sexuality also tells me something, and it's not exactly "credibility inspiring" “

Ok, good point.

(waits for it)

I agree.

Smedleyman, I meant no offense, either.

...kid learns about biology instead of the traditional western school “birds and bees” then that is something that needs to be studied and is not at all subject to a value judgement. It’s just data.

If I thought that this was a legit group of studies (some of them may be) then I would agree, wholeheartedly. However, I tend to think that some of this is just wank-material.

I could be wrong, I know that, but some of articles don't seem strong enough to support the 'this is just data' idea. I wish that was all it was, but somehow, I don't think so.

Since I'm about to hit the hay, I'm going to thank the OP for the NSFW tags, as I know I didn't need to see that as the last thing before dreamland.

And I thought I had it bad when I had to push Bessie's prolapsed vagina back in and follow her around for five minutes, elbow deep in cow cooter, hoping that the damn thing would stay in.

Alvy, you just demonstrated how words can be more powerful than photos...

*thank you* for that mental image. Nothing like visions of a bovine prolapse in the morning to wake you up good and proper.

Said credibility which is instantly taken away with the "music for growing up sexually" part of the study.

Well, Smedleyman, obviously you need to be a Dutch sexologist to be so unashamed to declare a love for Chillout Ibiza compilations! The rest of us backwards enthnographics plagued by ignorance about menarche can only entertain that passion in the closet.

(and not one but five tracks from these guys, ooh, trippy basslines, sex, the Netherlands... I'm starting to understand the origins of this project)

Well, I read this whole thread and still don't understand the FPP itself. Congrats.
