Yeah right...it's 55 and sunny here today, which has not been an uncommon occurrence this "winter". And I live in PA.

Tastes like chicken?

..but ...but... it's practically not even winter NOW! Stop messing with my mind, groundhog!

Here in PA, this January's temperatures were about 10 degrees F above normal. So far, winter started and ended in December.

First thing I saw this morning was a police chopper circling the neighborhood. Does that mean six weeks of crime?

What's his record and what's the "six more weeks" based on? Before the ground thaws? What?

To confuse matters, Canada's answer to Punxsutawney Phil, Wiarton Willie did NOT see his shadow, so us Canucks get an early spring while you Yanks enjoy your long winter.

Phil Connors: This is pitiful. A thousand people freezing their butts off waiting to worship a rat. What a hype. Well, it used to mean something in this town. They used to pull the hog out, and they used to *eat* it. You're hypocrites, all of you! You have a problem with what I'm saying, Larry?

What winter? Its been exceptionally warm - which I guess is good since it'll decrease the use of heating oil.

On the desert tip, we're still waiting for Mojave Max to emerge to signal the end of winter.

Tastes like chicken. If chicken were spliced with groundhog genes, and human genes, creating some sort of clucking, shadow-fearing, upright-walking, delicious monstrosity.

Mr. Oflinkey goes to see Phil every year. mr_crash_davis, you know, it has become quite the festival of debauchery. Does that make you feel any better? They don't eat the critter, but many go on a Bacchanalian bender in honor of the day. Rather Druid, I say.

Cute li'l fuckers.

They are super cute, but terminally dumb. Back in the day, when riding in a car and seeing them waddling around by the side of the road, I used to lean out the window and yell, "Hey Stupid!" at them, just for the pleasure of seeing them sit up and look around with an unmistakable "Huh?" expression.

That probably speaks unfortunate volumes about the kind of person I am, though.

Yeah, it hasn't been winter here in NJ since December. My folks came over from the UK a couple of weeks ago and claimed that it was cold. I politely said 'yes' and left it at that. Personally I don't do cold that well, so I'm loving this 'winter'. BTW, Punxsutawney Phil you can see your shadow because it's sunny and warm you idiot rodent...

Now that I know USians eat groundhogs, I don't want to hear another word about Europeans eating horse meat, ok? Each to their own carnivore eccentricities.

I had no idea that the whole groundhog winter ritual was for real. I thought they'd made it up for the movie.

This is why I like obsessively reading this site every day, I always learn something new and open my mind find new ammunition for the They Are Crazy, These Americans cliché.

Gator, thanks for that image!

I always find the 'early spring vs. six more weeks of winter' thing funny. Where I grew up, just six more weeks of winter after February 2nd would be an early spring.

very funny ... but we here in michigan haven't seen much real winter weather since before christmas ... every 3 or 4 days, it snows a bit and then melts

A thousand people freezing their butts off waiting to worship a rat.

The groundhog comes out of his hole and sees a shadow
It is the shadow of my right front tire
That means winter will last another six weeks
But not for him

As my 9 year old pointed out: with all of those TV lights shining on him, how could Phil not see his shadow?

We're about an hour north and the sun hasn't shone here all day, but it's 50°. Phooey on the rodent.

You can check his past predictions on his web site. He's seen his shadow 96 times and hasn't seen it 14 times. There aren't any records for nine years.

the warm winter is fucking with a lot of plants and animals around here, they are not leaving like they are supposed to, and we have some sort of odd winter moth thing that came here from some place else, and is tricking the birds into staying longer, and then they die of starvation, and it seems as if some of the trees are going to bud out early and then die in a late night freeze, this warm winter is NOT a good thing for the natural balance of things, however is is helping to use less oil and gas, but you wouldn't know from the cost of oil and gas...seems we are damned if we do damned if we don't, i for one welcome our new rising ocean overlords....
