Wonderful. Now we'll have Iranians trying to burn the MetaEmbassy. All because you felt the need to post this.

don't worry so much about the metaembassy (it's well fortified and has a full marine troll squad), it's the meta-KFC we need to worry about

It's a bit mean, no? The man is clearly possessed by religious fervor, which is kind of unsettling. And of course he's dressed in a funny hat and follows orthodox Islam, a religion that the West has less respect for each day.
But it's sort of becoming open season to ridicule them now, isn't it? Muslims, I mean.
My point: evangelical Christianity is pretty weird too. Speaking in tongues, holding your arms up in the sky as if you're trying to change two lightbulbs at once.
But I don't see folks set to music any videos of the speaking-in-tongues fundie-grundie Christians.
Just saying.
posted by capilano at 9:02 PM on February 21, 2006

Capilano, have you missed the last few decades of rock, dance and whatever music that uses Christian fundies as fodder for ridicule?

Just for you, capilano.

You think that's blasphemous?
Check out this video of Muslim rituals versus GOAT HORN.

You know, capilano, I don't care who you are, or what you believe, if you look that silly on tape, someone is going to put it to silly music, and I am going to laugh at it.

That's hilarious. What is he on about anyway?

Meh, would've been funnier if it was better synched. Has potential!

Hey, semmi, where's the post that came from at RP? I'm curious if it says anything else about the context. From here, it just looks similar to some black baptist church exertions I've seen, nothing particularly special, hilarious or frightening about it, really.

I think he might be possessed by a demon.

Do they have exorcisms in Islam? I don't think a simple fatwah is going to do the trick in his case.

Just 'cause it looks like other fundamentalist religious lunatics doesn't make it less hilarious and/or frightening.

mr: Roll down to Monday, February 20, 2006, The Princes discuss Slavery.

I don't know what the context is, but the Mullah seems like flipping out, and one of the fellows who pull him off his high seat look like the new president, whats-his-name.

I am pretty sure the dudes who mixed this are from Iran. I had seen this in a chain-mail way way before the whole cartoon circus started.
posted by lenny70 at 11:04 PM on February 21, 2006

I thought the music was remarkably well sync'd to the Mullah's actions, even to the point where I starting thinking this was staged. It's quite good.

You'll go to hell for this - and those Yugoslavians from Numa Numa really tie the room together

That was pretty weak. If you are going to shoot fish in a barrel you should use a RPG not a 22.

True - there's no clear indication that he's issuing a fatwa on anyone. He could just be "writhing in ecstasy" the way some ministers do to rile up the crowd. Never seen a preacher sweat? Sheeit. Of course, punching onesself in the face is a first for me with an Islamic imam, but I think everyone is jumping to conclusions a little with the fatwa/great satan reactions.

Kinda like my neighbor, who is sometimes away for weeks at a time. If he were Italian, we'd think nothing of it: the guy's travelling on business. But since he's an Arab, everyone's sure he's off planning the next 9/11. Follower of Islam gets excited? It must be in bloodthirsty hatred directed toward us.
posted by scarabic at 8:56 AM on February 22, 2006

Capilano. I'm like 89% sure that was a political address. Not a church service. Though in Islamic Republics it is hard to distinguish the difference.

This is a Theocracy we are talking about. And ANY theocracy is ripe for ridicule and should be an anathema to any thinking person. Here, there, or anywhere. Fuck these nutbags and their crazy-ass religious despotism. I don't care if it's that retard on the 700 Club blaming gays for global warming or some Mullah spazing out because he can't have some poor 13 year old girl stoned to death for wearing lip stick and wanting to vote.

It's not about religion. It's about power. And those who have power need to be ridiculed when they act like idiots.

Imagine if that was Congress - C-Span. It WOULD be instant fodder for every late nite comic in the country and would almost certainly be a reoccurring skit on SNL.

Can we stop this ridiculous foot stomping apples and oranges "oh yeah, well whadda about the Xtians!" comments with these posts. Let's assume we all hate all stripes of religous nuts equally, ok.
posted by tkchrist at 10:05 AM on February 22, 2006

Hey now hey now come on people. We have to respect religious people and their batshit demented divinely inspired behaviour and beliefs, remember? Oh wait... no we don't. Carry on.

Oh, and can we have some pictures of noddy-head orthodox Jews at the wall, set to some skullbursting death metal? Or would that be anti-semitic?

It might be, Decani, but it would also be AWESOME. Somebody get to work!

Always interesting how intolerant atheists are.

They should be mocked! They must be mocked! They must throw out their entire way of thinking!

So, so very evolved. Party on.

scarabic: "tolerance" might be relevant if atheists had any political power whatsoever; the real world, however, is dominated by religious people.
posted by Mars Saxman at 2:08 PM on February 22, 2006

And again - this is not footage of a religious ceremony, damn it. This a political body. One governed - near totally - by "religious" extremists. The goofy antics may or may not be a misunderstood cultural affectation. However the fact it - this irrational temper tantrum - is happening in the seat of a government institution that controls millions of peoples lives is one that should deeply trouble everybody.

Crying "intolerance" constantly is not only inaccurate - because we certainly ARE tolerating these morons we just don't agree or like them - but also screaming "intolerance" every time somebody get's made fun of is strident stupidity.
posted by tkchrist at 2:44 PM on February 22, 2006

They must throw out their entire way of thinking!

Absolutist strawman poppycock. Nobody here said this.

Again these are political figures. Ok. Get that through your head.

But, if as central and legal tenants to that way of thinking are: crushing any religious dissent, oppressing women, and murdering homosexuals... um... then yah, they may want to give their beliefs a second look.

Just like you would expect Rick Santorum to do.

What is it? Adopt an Extremist Muslim month? Are these people now universally the poster children for lefty guilt? Man, talk about going full circle.
posted by tkchrist at 3:28 PM on February 22, 2006

Thanks for the pointer, semmi.

I wasn't screaming "intolerance," for what it's worth, nor was I saying it wasn't worth making fun of; I laughed. But more importantly, I wasn't aware this was a legislative rather than religious gathering; that is scary.

Btw, I just sent the link to my (Iranian) mother, who told me she'd already seen it. The mullah isn't railing against the US, Danish newspapers, or cartoonists; it's an Ashura sermon. Ashura is a day of mourning for Shiites and commemorates the death of Imam Hussein in 680 AD. Devout Shiites fast, self flagellate, and openly weep during this fun holiday. As a child in Iran, I remember being really bummed on Ashura not because I gave a toss about some fundy who died 1300 years ago, but because there were only religious programs on TV and you had to hear wailing from every mosque minaret all day.
posted by Devils Slide at 10:03 PM on February 22, 2006

Sure! There are no judgmentals or pejoratives in any MetaFilter conversation about folks with religion! It's not intolerance, it's just... disagreement! My bad!

Point taken that a funny-video-thread is not the place to get into it, though.
posted by scarabic at 9:03 AM on February 23, 2006

You people really need to learn the definition of "intolerance" in this place. Jesus.
posted by tkchrist at 9:16 AM on February 23, 2006

Always interesting how intolerant atheists are.

Oh, indeed. Why, I constantly seek the curtailment of the rights of religious believers and I issue an atheist fatwah every second Sunday of the month, you ineffable cretin.

They should be mocked!

Go for it, dude. We're big enough to take it - unlike so many religious berks. Compare and contrast our reaction with the intolerance of Islam.
