"The new Audrey Hepburn?"

"Damn, Natalie, you a crazy chick!" (video) Natalie Portman, rapper and riot grrl? Maybe Lazy Sunday (video;mefi post) wasn't a freak occurence after all. Personally, I had expected the Lonely Planet guys to end up a one-hit wonder, but in my book they've (at least) moved up a notch to talented one-trick pony. Another very well-done digital short that should be seen by a lot more people than SNL's dismal ratings will allow.

I'm with marx and soulfather... it was a solid "9" until Samberg showed up, that dropped it to a "6".

But still funny.

"Whatchu want Natalie?"
"To drink and fight".
"Whatchu need Natalie?"
"To f*ck all night."

Funny.

that's fucking amazing.
I don't know who came up with that, but it is now tied for my favorite celebrity appearance on SNL. the other favorites?

paul mccartney being polite while chris farley goes all fanboy on him.
alec baldwin doing "the man of a thousand voices" and trying to impersonate paul mccartney by doing a screechy old british lady voice.

Ditto on the viking, but I have to say Chris Parnell didn't add much either. They should have let Natalie Portman do the whole thing herself as a hilarious, out of context rap video.

If the source of humor is going to always be: "White people are really funny when they try black gangsta' rap" -- well comedy is in a sad state nowadays then.
posted by skepticallypleased at 11:33 AM on March 5, 2006

Pink doing gangsta rap: not funny. Portman doing gangsta rap: funny. There's a lot more of a disconnect there than just race.
posted by rosemere at 11:36 AM on March 5, 2006

Pink is not trying to be funny -- big difference.
posted by skepticallypleased at 11:37 AM on March 5, 2006

Ok -- and, you're right -- it's not about race -- it's about "straightlaced people are really funny when they try gangsta' rap".
posted by skepticallypleased at 11:40 AM on March 5, 2006

I think it's more "very polite and not-foulmouthed actress who typically plays sweet characters is really funny when she does vulgar gangsta rap", actually, not necessarily the white aspect. No one laughs at Eminem (in this way), after all. Additionally, "Lazy Sunday" was "dorks rapping about dorky stuff".

Big difference.

I saw Natalie Portman and Elmo dressed up as elephants about a week or so ago on Sesame Street. She acted better as an elephant with Elmo than she acted in any of those last three movies Lucas made. But really--she was fully into the elephant character, taking it as seriously and humorously as the part deserved.

I have deep respect for anyone who appears on that show (well, I did see Laura Bush on Sesame Street once and by the way she read her book aloud, I think she might have been one of those children that got left behind).
