he monk just taps on regardless; he wipes off blood every now and then, mumbles, smokes and drinks Red Bull.

Oh fuck that ruined it to me ....it's like looking at the Godfather and the mafiosi are drinking coca-cola instead of red wine... I wanna puke.

Everybody who gets tattooed has to buy some flowers and incense for the tattooist’s teacher.

Very poetic ! If only the monk didn't get a cut from Joy the flowerist it would really be nice.

A monk warns that only genuine berserkers are authorised to go mad.

Those who already are mad please berserk with moderation !

disappear once more into their everyday realities of killing, rape, extortion, robbery, protection rackets, and the trafficking of women, children and drugs.

And now thanks to tatoo they feel God protected too ? That's nice, they really could use some encouragement.

I think I want a "genuine berserker" tattoo now...

I wonder how the author of the second article is so sure the tattoo wearers are assorted criminal types? Did he get their CVs on the way in? A lot of working Thai people, including soldiers, taxi drivers, farmers and cops have these tattoos. My grandfather-in-law had the bulletproof protective ones and he was a farmer.

On this subject there is a cool Thai film called jomkhamungwej (necromancer) which has the magic tattoos (and bad cops) as a central theme. Except for the overlong fight scenes toward the end it is quite a good watch. A review.

p.s. Red Bull is a Thai beverage.

Indeed. I suspect the "Red Bull" they talk about is the stuff sold in little glass bottles, not the cans -- you can find it at most Asian grocery stores.

When they refer to Red Bull in Thailand what they really mean is Krating Daeng (กระทิงแดง), which of course means red bull but is the original Thai formula which is non-carbonated, has no caffeine and tastes like a sweet cough syrup. Crazy delicious.

Wonderful FPP the cuban. It's an excellent ex-pat Thai blog. I like Richard Barrow's writing and enjoyed reading a number of interesting links there, stimulating my interest in the culture, which I knew nothing about. What a beautiful written language it is.

I'm heading to Thailand later this year and thinking about picking up a tattoo. Do you guy's think it's safe? I'm a little worried about HIV, infection, hep... etc etc...

I know alot of people who've had tats done there without any ill effects. A friend got one done at a Wat and told me about a well inked monk who acts a "living brochure" - you point at the tattoo you want, and voila the Kru sak marks you with a similar one.

Yes, AIDS is a big problem in Thailand, but if they use fresh and sterile equipment you should be fine. As they say there "up to you".
