Snoring inhibits killing capitalists.

The Chinese Military is evidently big enough that they can now afford to bar chronic snorers from enlisting. Uh oh.

Awesome, now can we work on barring chronic snorers from my apartment couch?

In combat, it's hard to be sneaky when you snork.

A great idea. I had to sleep with a bunch of middle-aged men in a dorm a few years ago and couldn't sleep due to the two chainsaw snorers. Let the soldiers get some shut-eye so they can wake up and shoot someone reliably between the eyes.

Also in the article, we learn that "ethnic tattoos" are OK, while "fashionable tattoos" are not.

So what's an 'ethnic tatoo' in China? Badly spelled Emglish words?

that's both scary and funny.

good thing you linked to the wiki on the chinese military, btw. otherwise I'd have had no idea what you were talking about.

Having a gigantic military isn't as important as it used to be. The costs of having common soldiers around just for defense hurts an economy because you have to feed and clothe these people. China seems as though it is in the process of modernizing its army and wants to save some money so that it can move more efficiently in that direction.

Before we spent a week in the field once our entire regiment slept in the same barracks; one of those giant halls with rows and rows of bunkbeds, enough for two hundred to be sure.

As we were getting ready for bed a few of us noticed that our Squadron Sergeant-Major (SSM), a barrel chested fellow to be sure, was wearing jungle print bikini briefs. A few of us snickered but nothing more was said, until half an hour later, when with the lights still on the SSM was fast asleep with his arm over his head. The snoring/skin-flapping type noises that emanated from the SSM was enough to make a Harley Davidson jealous and drive the rest of us mad. Eventually someone lost his patience and shouted out from the back of the barracks:

"Hey Tarzan, roll over!"

The whole place burst into laughter.

Well, China has 56 officially recognized minorities. Some of them traditionally wear tattoos. That just *might* be what they're referring to.

Soldiers need nights quiet, if snorers don't provide it how can they incite vilence?

Simple common sense.

Naw, just have em build roads, dams, dredge rivers, and repair schools.

Jenga, banishedimmortal,
I believe PenDevil was making a joke about how, in the West we often see people getting tattoos of Chinese characters who have little or no idea what they mean, and humorously suggesting that the reverse would be true in China...

Brilliant. And I have to thank the wonderful MeFi CD swap for allowing me to recognize the reference.

I wish the Taiwanese army had a similar restriction. Any number of nights I had to listen to other soldiers' snoring all night.

I do know they don't allow officer candidates to have tattoos, though.
