You just can't drink and dial. No, really, you can't. Not if you're dialing on this phone (scroll down to "Voice of Reason".). Need more help?: See also...

I've been talking about this kind of phone for years except you can set limits/phone access yourself. So after three beers it locks out the boss/co-worker numbers. After 4 all text message capabilities are locked. After 6-7 the only numbers that work are home/taxi/emergency services...

So if you're trying to call a cab.....

Sounds like a great idea to have a phone that won't work, if you're drunk and can't drive home.

I, um, gee... kinda think 911 should never be locked out... maybe it isn't. slimepuppy has the right idea.

Did ya'll know that if you dial the White House at 3 AM someone answers the phone? The FBI has an answering machine. (The was before Sep. 11, 2001)

Nowhere in either story about that phone does it say that the phone won't work if you blow too high on the BAC scale, ScotchLynx. Slimepuppy does have a great idea there, though.

Isn't this what high school is for? So you learn those lessons there instead of in the larger world?

Terrible idea, of course. Anything that gives people the idea that they can regulate their alcohol intake before driving is likely to lead to more road fatalities, not less. The only way that private ownership of this kind of technology would save lives is if it was fitted to cars.

You'd also have to set the limits very low, to effectively eliminate *any* drink driving. I'm not actually arguing for that, but I don't think that using technology to provide false security is responsible. GPS is a case in point. There are plenty of people who endanger themselves and others, walking, climbing, sailing and the like, beyond their capabilities, because they are given a sense of security by being able to see where they are. I see this as presenting a similar danger.

And no. This isn't a phone that won't let you 'drink and dial', at least not according to the description I can see here. That's just a headline.

This will kill off the booty calls. I vote against!

You're all forgetting this.

Advantages

1) You can still make emergency calls.
2) You feel like a creepy ass typing in blocked numbers
3) Can't be used as some lameass "Yeah I can the ex so I can drive" type rationale.

I really really need this to shut down my email and IM capabilities when I should know better but don't.
