I have been trying and trying and trying the pen-spinning trick and I just can't get it.

Pen spinning is easier to learn without a pen. Get something heavier or longer like a drumstick. It also helps to have a lot of slightly down-time like chemistry lab, where I learned :)

Yeah, I learned pen spinning by using batons and small pvc pipes. Helps a lot.
