Hee, good fun. The Prince one sounds like Hot Chip (as you might expect).

Frank Sinatra singing "then God is seven, then God is seven..." just made my day.

What, no Crackity Jones sung in the voice Paco (pedro) Pico Peidra?

Otherwise pretty damn good.

His Hendrix impression is pretty damn good. Except for the content of that mumbling at the beginning.
posted by interrobang at 9:24 AM on June 1, 2006

That content is in the Pixies track. Pretty funny!
posted by sonofsamiam at 9:25 AM on June 1, 2006

whow, holy crap. I thought, at first, what a terrible bad idea. Then I listened to them and they're really great! It's like he took all the good stuff about the particular musician and crammed it all into the goodness of a little pixies song.

pretty great.

vomoitous, my sentiments exactly. this is great. thanks!

This Bee Gees styled cover of wave of mutilation is just a little too cool.

I've long considered starting a band called the Styxies, where we cover Pixies songs as they would have been sung by Styx. Would this be of interest to Pixies fans, I've often wondered.
posted by juiceCake at 9:43 AM on June 1, 2006

I can't reccomend TV on the Radio's version of Mr. Grieves enough, as well.
posted by Divine_Wino at 9:44 AM on June 1, 2006

juiceCake, that is a truly inspired idea.
posted by 40 Watt at 9:45 AM on June 1, 2006

I was ready to hate this. Let me add my voice to the praise for the covers. Beach Boys' "Levitate Me" is my particular favorite. Very lovingly done.
posted by Joey Michaels at 9:59 AM on June 1, 2006

"This Monkey..." is oddly compelling with a big band arrangement. Paul Anka should cover that.

You're all welcome-- I don't really have much more to say about 'em either, except that they're excellent.
posted by 40 Watt at 10:36 AM on June 1, 2006

I don't know who Hot Chip is but the Prince one sounds EXACTLY like Jamie Lidell. Now I can say stuff like "Jamie Lidell just sounds like some random white dude impersonating Prince covering the Pixies" and be RIGHT.

Not hearing the Jamie Liddel thing at all, but then I've only seen him live a couple of times, never bought the records (he's mindblowing live, by the way).

For all your Hot Chip needs.

I was thinking specifically of Down With Prince, a song which expresses sentiments I have often drunkenly roared.

geoff, it would have been cooler if they had travelled back in time to record these with Marley, Elvis, and Hendrix, since they all died long before The Pixies ever formed. ; )

Yeah, I wasn't sure what to expect but I clicked on Wave of Mutilation first and laughed my ass off. Great post! The Hendrix Vamos had to be my favorite.
posted by LeeJay at 3:29 PM on June 1, 2006

These should be utterly fucking terrible.

But they're not. Not at all.

I've noticed, as a general rule, Pixies covers are uniformly bad. Even Black's reworking of his own material on Frank Black/Black Francis was lame when held up to the originals.

Maybe what you need to redo a Pixies tune is to totally reimagine it as something besides a Pixies tune. It totally works for these.
posted by eyeballkid at 3:40 PM on June 1, 2006

Shame the 'Jimi Hendrix' version of Vamos is only 64Kbps - it's the best one.

How about David Bowie does Cactus?

(Only *well* this time.)
posted by Blue Stone at 4:12 PM on June 1, 2006

Damn, that was brilliant. Here I was all ready to hate every single one of them, but now all I can do is think about who should cover which Pixies song. Little Richard doing Planet Of Sound? The Velvet Underground do Bone Machine? (I can almost imagine Lou Reed singing/drawling that "he bought me a soda, tried to molest me in the parking lot, yep yep yep!" line.)

And imagine! Buddy Holly & The Crickets doing Here Comes Your Man! It'd be great.

And re: the Liddell comparison, I can kind of see where lbergstr is coming from, though it's less obvious if you've only seen him live. It'd be nice to hear him scat-singing Nimrod's Son, mind ...

I said "YOU FUCKING DIE", to her
Huh? What?
No, no! I was talking to Kim
I said "you fucking die"
No, I was just- we were just goofing around
No, no. It didn't have anything to do with anything
She said: "Don't tou- anybody touch this is my stuff"
And I said "You fucking die" like that
I was finishing her part for her
You know what I mean?

Where is my mind by Queen

Man. I can hear this already. Take that seesaw lead line, clean it up right to the beat and compress it super tight—Brian May all over the place.

And then near the end of the chorus, Freddie sings a clear "Waaay", and the wall of vocal harmony follows with an up-swooping "...waaawaay" and they come together on "down!"
