MOG - yet another social networking site. This one's pretty new, and is centered entirely around your music collection. It has an automated helper that catalogues your music and organizes a comprehensive list on your page, tracks recent songs and artists played, etc. It's super customizable and has a good linking/recommendation system, though it's a bit slow at the moment. I know social networking sites are a dime a dozen, but this one's focus solely on music makes it worth checking out. Reminds me of Audiogalaxy, bless its soul!

Isn't this why we have Last.fm?

Oh yeah a tool that indexes my music on my machine. It's probably just a front for the RIAA.
posted by Mr_Zero at 3:57 PM on June 20, 2006

Nah, it'd run better if it was backed by those fools.

Yeah, and last.fm doesn't judge me for the T.a.T.u. mp3s I own but never listen to...

I doubt it.

I've been using MOG for the last few weeks; it's like last.fm but with a built in blogging tool. If you need a free blog host and you like music, then I this might be what you're looking for. Last.fm AFAIK doesn't have the same functionality. Like I said though, if that's what you're looking for.

And again, I am finding myself tempted to listen to play music that burnishes my MOG image as a well-rounded blah blah blah instead of just listening to whatever I want to listen to, which, since I registered for MOG, is next to nothing. And, yes, I am on a Coil spree lately.

More featureful than Last.fm, IMO. Though I have nothing to blog about.

last.fm does blogging too

That's a drawback though. I think you're at least slightly cool for having them. With last.fm I'd never know.

(it's spelt t.A.T.u.)

Hmm. I'm thinking that MOG is sort of a soulseek to last.fm's limewire. I'm interested in getting in on the ground floor of something new, and I like that it catalogues my library. I'd hate to work from the ground up on last.fm with what I'm listening to at the moment. Once it stops being hammered and evens out, it looks like a pretty great resource for new stuff, as reviewing and sharing looks super easy, and it seems like there's more room for expression than on last.fm, at least at first glance.

Anyhow, it's not like I think it's unbelievably incredible, just something new that I thought I'd share. But whether it flourishes or withers and dies is up to us, and I'm taking the plunge. At least for a few days. :)

Yeah, that's why I stopped using LastFM. Pandora doesn't put everything you ever play in your Permanent Record.

MOG software doesn't seem ready for prime time, and neither it nor Last let you define different "stations/channels" to more accurately reflect the variations in my taste depending on different days/times/moods. For now my faves are Pandora and Lala...

My last.fm profile has been stuffed for a long time, after a couple of times when I left, in one case a Billy Holiday album, and in another case a Stars of the Lid album, playing on loop for 24 hours each. Maybe it's time to start fresh.

*pours a 40 on the soil for Audiogalaxy as well*

Man, I found an mp3 of "Another Day In The Sun" by The Moffs on Audiogalaxy. A 7" single relased by an obscure Australian garage band in about 1985. But Audiogalaxy offered it to me in glorious mp3 for immediate download. Those were the days.

It's a bit of a shame that their indexing client seemingly chokes on .m4a files (on mac at least), making it somewhat less than useful.
posted by influx at 12:31 AM on June 21, 2006

The client seems to have huge problems identifying a lot of files...

...Could not identify: Jeff Buckley - the Boy with The Thorn in his Side.mp3
Identified: Gentlyfall - Wish.mp3
Could not identify: 7percent - Theroad.mp3
Could not identify: Az Jazz - Touch the Sun.mp3
Could not identify: Subsonic Headdub - Squelch.mp3
Could not identify: Flying Saucer Attack - Space 1999.mp3...

For some reason it heads off to Gracenote to look up each and every track, rather than just reading the ID3 tags. Poor.

good thing about last.fm is it works well with Linux. And it has my music on it. Does MOG work with linux?

Yeah same here, I was excited about Mog, but after leaving the Mog-o-matic running all day yesterday it was stuck at 4%...

yikes!

The problem I have with these kinds of sites is that they become nearly useless if you have even the slightest diversity in your taste in music. Don't most people by say, 30, have some classical, some jazz, some electronic, some rock, maybe even some heavy metal and rap?

(And yes, I know, classical sucks, jazz sucks, rock sucks, music sucks, waves propagating through a medium suck, etc...)

No, but your favorite band sucks.
posted by beelzbubba at 9:08 AM on June 21, 2006

actually, Pastabagel, that's not really a big problem on last.fm, for me. I'm a fairly diverse listener, so their overall recommendations for me are not that on, but their weekly recommendations are great! the weeklies are based on exactly this diversity - the fact that I like things I only listen to once in a while depending on whim - and I've found some really fantastic music that way.

Two things I noticed immediately about MOG that turned me off.

First, the use of Gracenote CDDB instead of ID3 tags. This bothered me for two reasons; I suspect that MOG may sell usage information to companies for marketing purposes. I don't have a huge problem with that, I just felt I was being used without a kiss first. And second, I have a ton of stuff that isn't in CDDB.

The other discouraging factor was the limited search (admittedly I am not a member so I don't know how it works if you sign up) that instead of giving me a search by genre, it looks more like a dating site. Don't need it.

I'll join the chorus-I don't see anything here I don't already get in spades on last.fm. Pandora might get there someday, but their parsing oof music gives me spasms.
posted by beelzbubba at 10:02 AM on June 21, 2006

Maybe this'll be neat. Probably not. What's the problem that needs solving here? And why does it have to look everything up through gracenote?
posted by klangklangston at 10:02 AM on June 21, 2006

oh yeah, both the Moffs and Audiogalaxy rocked..

also on last.fm evidently tracks played can be removed from your profile in case something was left playing that has messed up your profile, using the profile editor.

posted by Pastabagel at 10:59 AM on June 21, 2006

Well, I'm OK with Gracenote because it provides a stabilizing factor - it makes sure we're both listening to, say, "Smashing Pumpkins" instead of "The Smashing Pumpkins" or "Smashing Pumpkins, The." I don't trust my ID3 tags, especially since they've been changed by iTunes and look weird in winamp. If there's a central database that ensures I can click on an artist and really see who else is listening to them. As for stuff not in the database, that's valid, but I listen to some really weird shit and only 4 or 5 out of perhaps 50 didn't show up. Kind of weird that they have Circulatory System but not Olivia Tremor Control, and Skygreen Leopards but not Ivytree, but that's all being addressed as the network grows.

MOG also just sent the most obnoxious 'newsletter' I've ever read. I'll spare you the gory details, but suffice to say it signed off with 'laterz'.
posted by influx at 2:25 PM on June 21, 2006

After installing MOG, then later turning off my computer, Windows wouldn't start. The logon screen was just black, with the mouse pointer. I went into safe-mode, uninstalled MOG (being the last program I installed) and started up again. This time, Windows booted fine. Just sayin'.
