Media That Matters Film Festival. Short indie films on important social topics. One of this year's entries is A Girl Like Me by Kiri Davis. It recreates the doll experiment from the 1950's in which African American girls found white dolls prettier than black dolls. Also, Asparagus! (A Stalk-umentary).

Nice. That was quite well done.

It really is a good post. There's not much else for me to say other than thanks!

Excellent, caddis - I watched the two clips you recommended - "A Girl Like Me" is heartbreaking, it made me so sad. I also watched #16, "No Child Left Behind" - about unethical military recruiting tactics. Also good.

I plan to watch all the rest but just wanted to stop by to say thanks and give a thumbs up for the post. What jokeefe said.

Thanks.

It breaks my heart that fifty years later we have made so little progress in building self esteem.

I really recommend this year's winner. All the films are thought provoking and well done. While "A Girl Like Me" evoked the most emotion for me, Slip of the Tongue, which addresses the question, "what is your ethnic make-up," is quite creative and compelling.

This is fantastic. Thank you, caddis, I wouldn't have come across this. I almost didn't anyway because I had managed to overlook this post until I was stuck on the phone with someone and just browsing up and down the front page of mefi for anything interesting that I hadn't looked at yet; glad I did.

Only had time to watch a few of these tonight, but it was definitely worth my time. Going to pass this on to a few friends of mine that I'm sure will appreciate it as well.

I stumbled onto this article about the doll test earlier today, which has the same basic content and a few added details as the short.

Good post.

Ah hell, and that's the same exact text as at your Baltimore link above. Right-o.
