I like the arch understatement in this comment from the harbormaster: "Criticisms in the media of our ability to conduct a search properly have proved to be unfounded."

It is understood that the search operation to rescue Mr Harvey cost at least £10,000.

I hope they're at least going to wring that out of him (to be paid in public service, not cash). And that his wife kicks his ass.

So it appears that he did all this because he wanted to sneak to the mainland to engage in shenanigans.

I'm very confused. If he went ashore in Dorset for shenanigans, how did he end up floating unconscious in the Channel?

Is it common in England to get off the island by faking your own death? It's like "Escape from New York".

It wasn't England he fled, it was Guernsey. Rather more understandable. A small town in a bottle (okay, 65000 people in a bottle). Apparently the main reason he went over to Dorset was to get rid of the diving equipment he'd left home with.
