Why would customs be a problem for him? With his political background I'd think he'd have a much easier time getting through customs than joe tourist. Depending on his purpose for visit, he might even be enjoying diplomatic protections.

"How did he clear customs and enter this country?"

I think you mean immigration, not customs. As long as he wasn't carrying any LSD or fake Gucci bags or the like, then he'd have no problem clearing customs.

It really is pretty surprising that he's in the states, I gotta say I'm amazed they let him in, with the incessant demonizing of Iran that's going on. Here's hoping his trip will help foster some sense of balance.

What, inviting foreign politicans in to hear their views and engage them in debate? Whatever is the world coming to...

When is a self link not a self link? When you 'accidentally' forget to hit Enter and 'accidentally' leave the name of your website (as seen on your user page) in a front page post (albeit sans hyperlink).

What's with all the shitty editorialising? The nutshell version of Khatami is that he was a popular, west-leaning president expressing the anti-revolutionary, westernising tendencies of the majority of the Iranian population, against the theocratical mullahs.

So, he finally condemns Bin Laden.

Did you even read the article you linked to? It says pretty clearly: "Khatami said he was one of the first world leaders to condemn 'the barbarous acts' of Sept. 11".

How did he clear customs and enter this country?

It's pretty simple how he got into the county. Bush personally approved his visa.
President Bush was quoted over the weekend by the Wall Street Journal as saying he personally approved the decision to grant Mr. Khatemi a visa because he was "interested" in what the ex-leader had to say.

I might want to hear that Khatami has been making a speech. (though I can find that out from major news outlets). I might want to hear a collection of opinions on the man and his message.

I do not want to hear your opinion, based on nothing other than pulling it out of your ass, that he is a liar; neither do I want to know, without a valid reason, that you believe he should have been turned away at 'customs'.

Got it?

I think it's pretty clear that Khatami was the lesser of two evils by a long shot.

No worries, though, if Khomeni and Ahmedinejad don't manage to completely subvert Iran's centuries-old democratic processes, they'll fall flat on their faces by the time the next election rolls around. That's what happens to all demagogues who advocate bad foreign policy... right?

The "attack Iran" neocons have swiftly proven their ignorance by making a stink about Khatami's visit. They apparently lack even a scant understanding of Iranian people or politics, instead opting to dehumanize the population as they already have with anyone identified as Iraqi...
