And now for the Marvel haters :-D

IGN's top 50 DC Comics covers should satisfy those who didn't like the Marvel covers posted yesterday. Great art, traditional themes, and strange psychadelia.

Lovely. I trust we'll be seeing Image here tomorrow, followed by Dark Horse on Wednesday. Next week is all Manga.

Nice. But the 50 DC Comics covers were linked in the comments of the Marvel post.

I gotta say, James Jean (Fables) really rocks the shit. His covers are spectacular.

Sigh...

I know I'm a geezer, but this stuff is all flash, and no substance. All pinup, and no storytelling.

Now here's a cover for you:

I'll just link to my comment in the other post.

Man, I guess they like Alex Ross.

(well, and Frank Quitely; but that part I can agree with 100%)

Sooner or later they'll come up with a photoshop filter to do what Alex Ross does, and then his career will be over.

God, I hope so, riotgrrl69.
But why stop there? Let's gather up some ol' Comico, First and Eclipse work and finish up with a Fantagraphics extravaganza!

Or -were you being sarcastic?

Although not a geezer myself, I actually agree with jpburns and his assessment of this new work. Don't get me wrong, being an illustrator/cartoonist, I love all of this stuff on one level or another -but my own personal tastes draw more toward bold, strong work like this.

And Kirby? Forgetaboutit. He is the one, the only, and on his worst day, tops most all of this stuff.

Damn! There was actually some great artwork there. I feel ridiculous being so behind the times comic-wise, though. I just read through Captain America 250-375 (late 80s) and it was fantastic, but what are all these new comics? I'm so out of the loop!

Regarding the Most Honorable Jack Kirby ... he was brilliant. The way he revolutized the way that motion and action could be captured and expressed dynamically was just ground-breaking.

But I must confess ... sometimes his covers suffer from a tremendous amount of repetition. Take Captain America. Not matter the content, Kirby often chose to give us yet another "comin'-thru" shot of Cap, usually grinning or holding his mouth open in a patriotic yawp.****

I know, I know ... I'll need to do a mitzvah or three to make up for doubting the King's imminence.

revolutized.

Yeah. Revolutized. Who needs "-ion" anyway?

Man, I guess they like Alex Ross.

That because Alex Ross is a god, as some did (ok me) remark yesterday. Find a copy of Kingdom Come or the coffee-table retrospective Mythology: The DC Comics Art of Alex Ross and you'll see what I mean.

Gotta say though, I was mightily impressed with James Jean as well.

Holy crap is Kingdom Come good.
That speech Superman gives Captain Marvel while holding his mouth is one of my passages from any comic ever.

2nd only to Doc Manhattan's thermodynamic speech in Watchmen.

but, you could say that about anyone...

*shudder*

...my FAVORITE passages...

Wish I could edit my posts.

I'd love to, but other than the complete list of archives (with cover pics), Dark Horse doesn't have a gallery of covers like this.

But, just an FYI: I've love to do massively more comic-book posts to the blue. I have a feeling that people would start to get annoyed and call me out for it.

I like comic book posts. I like art. (Big, big fan of Ross). I don’t know that liking DC or Marvel is mutually exclusive. Good stuff is good stuff.
And this post is nifty stuff.

Kickstart, I say go for it, as long as it's quality and not just "here's a good one!" - not to imply that's what you'd do, just expressing my wishes. Always good to have comics present in my life.

Now this is a cool image. But DC sucks for real.
