BBC One's new channel idents. Dancers are out, circles are in. Along with hippos synchronised swimming, gravity defying cyclists and surfers. Dude.

Circle? Why not based around a one?

It looks a bit like an eye and that has served CBS so well for decades.

Hmm, not as good as the Channel 4 idents where the 4 materialises, like this.

Come to think of it, nothing will ever come near the celebrities swearing ident used on E4 and late-night Channel 4.

The lowercase 'one' sucks.

Probably inspired by the smoke circles they were blowing whilst ploughing through thier ganja stash whilst trying to work out how to brand the Beeb for the next part of the millenium.

Have you seen the BBC radio promo with Elvis?

I wish they'd get rid of that thing they do where the bottom two-thirds of the screen are bright red with the programme details on it and then the top one-third slides down to meet it. Having said that, I'd trade it all for no more reality TV and for dumping Graham Norton from every TV channel in the land.

hey, I dig it. If I remember correctly, though, the circle theme is very similar to some of the CBC ones I saw a wee bit back...

Oh and thanks for the linkz, matthewr. nobody has anything on the Channel 4 idents. I'd never seen the swearing one before!

BBC Zero? That's the first thing I thought of when I saw the big circle then read the BBC test. And then read the smaller text that said "one". Meh

matthewr's right. Nothing is going to beat the celebrities swearing ident. That was a thing of beauty.

That Elvis promo is pretty cool. Maybe the big O is redolent of the quality of the BBC's output disappearing up its own sphincter?

This brings back memories....

What's up with the BBC3 logo? The other ones are all very similar, but this one...

Those were really neat. I love how the logo came together like that, and the second one was great. Who was the guy who said England? Hee!

Was it the BBC that had the advert, recently pulled, with all of the smaller faces flying together over a field to form one giant face? It was pulled for being too grotesque, or too scary, or somesuch. (A Youtube link would be appreciated if it exists...)

Why not based around a one?

Why not based around a circle? :)

More seriously – it signifies the “o” in “one” doesn’t it?

The lowercase 'one' sucks.

You joke surely. I think the text, because of it’s placement with the logo, looks pretty cool myself.

I never really liked the dancing; it all looked a bit “Saturday night variety show”.

I have a feeling that these new CGI swimming hippos may suffer the same fate.

mykescipark:
Here ya go - the BBC flying heads advert - it's for BBC digital-only channels, part of freeview, the free over-the-air digital TV service (the gov is turning off analog transmissions 2008-2011)

It generated a lot of complaints from viewers. I rather liked it on my big telly, but watching it now in a small size does make me a touch queasy. Also discussed on the blue...

Alas, the original ad on visit4info (longer, and with familiar celebs and characters, including postman pat) has moved, and is for paid members only - more flying-heads
Had a good look, and my google-foo at finding it online elsewhere has failed. Sorry.

John Spencer's made me smile.

Damn, the swearing celebrities is the best video I've seen in some time.

Though the new BBC idents have cool... pictures...

I quite liked the recent E4 promo for The Sopranos, featuring a drive across the UK.

Ob ... I just wish that were true ... cos I work for Red Bee Media (formerly BBC Broadcast) wot created these idents ... and sadly no ganja was involved ...
