Self-link?
posted by greycap at 11:53 PM on October 6, 2006

The busloads of people that show up to take pictures of the house and garage have become such an annoyance that Google asked The Associated Press not to publish the property’s address, although it can easily be found on the Internet using the company’s search engine."

Heh.

$1700/mo for a garage!? Jesus christ.

plus they only rented it as a way to pass cash back to one of their employees, a little shady if you ask me.

Maybe I should move my business to my garage :) It seems that's where a lot of the big ones start!

Yeah it is a self link. A digg style 'passthrough' where the link goes to a self-link blog post to a more interesting story. Weak. Ban. etc.

What is wrong with posting a self link if it is relevant news?

What is wrong with posting a self link if it is relevant news?

Did you not see the bit of text before the big flashing light? The bit that says: "You read the guidelines, right? Because linking to your own site or a project you worked on in this space will result in a deletion and your account will be banned."

Also, this was news days ago. I'd be different if it was interesting news, but it wasn't. Perhaps this is why no-one else posted it, especially as a one-link post with loads of bold text just to make it stand out a bit more in case we can't read.

If you want to read something about Google, try the fact that they're putting a lid on new products. Consider it a present - something to read after wondering why you wasted $5 on your first, and last, post.

You old/middle timers (I mean that with respect, delmoi) are being too even handed about this self-linking stuff. Where is the outrage and ruthless snarking?

I see that it is up to the next generation to take up the hammer and tongs and make this place "self policing" in the sense that a self-linker shall be... err... ridiculed without pity.

Ah, man... on preview, it looks like the fellow is being sensible. There will be no pitchforks and burning, there will be no long line of funny images posted inline. It is Friday night, and all the cool people are getting drunk or going on dates or having sex. Or all of the above.

PS Relevant news to what, dear thecashcow?

You guys are certainly a bit harsh on new people to this site...my apologies for the self link. Yes I should have read the TOS, but no I didn't.

And now you're banned.

I dunno. I usually don't into that myself, plus no one else was posting anything I was hoping for an animated gif fest (in fact, I was looking through my animated gif collection when I found that mfbanned.gif posted above).

But it seems like everyone is asleep or something. Or out partying (it is Friday night, after all). Pretty boring, really. I did post on MeTa so maybe maybe Optimums Chyme or someone will get a chance to "chyme" in.

You're not going to be a new person, though; you're going to be banned. There are absolutely no exceptions to this policy. Whenever the mods wake up, the link will be deleted and your account will be closed.

I mean, let's be honest here, you posted this at midnight (3am eastern) on Friday for a reason.

It's not 3am here mate. It's 5pm Saturday afternoon. I'm in Australia.

I feel a little sorry for thecashcow, someone knock some sense into me!

If I can be of help, here, liquorice: He self-linked. On the front page. Blatantly without reading the guidelines that keep metafilter from devolving into a pit of hellish advertisement. If we here weren't fair minded individuals, we might even suggest that his user name, thecashcow, speaks of a nefarious predisposition to such activity. However, I can see why you feel sympathy for the fellow. He's been honest, at least, in that he's from Australia. But ignoring the guidelines? If I were a proper Mefite, I would also call into question his posting history: throw away comments at best. Could he have really missed all of those other self-linked posts that got deleted in the meantime? Really, there's no excuse.

Fear not, the Metafilter Night Watch has succeeded at least in identifying the self-link thanks to delmoi. Unfortunately, our ascerbic tongued enforcers are asleep or having fun, and the admins must be sleeping too (it is difficult to imagine that these holy people might engage in such vulgar practices such as fun, but I'm sure they it's within their realm of activities as well). I feel sad that my animated gif skillz are nil.

Every time you self-link, a kitten masturbates... or something.

uh yeah it was greycap that pointed it out. I didn't even check until I saw his comment, after I posed my on-topic one. After that, it was easy to see that he linked to the same eponymous website in his profile as he did in this FPP.

The fact that I'm even posting on metafilter on a Friday night speaks more to my lameness then anything else :P

Ah, finally! I can finally rest knowing that gifs have been posted to this self-linked thread. This world has order in the form of chaos and now I am content. Thank you, loquacious, thank you from the bottom of my $5 dollar n00by heart.

I have also decided that sleep deprivation is indeed akin to drunkeness except my spelling is much more tolerable.

Woooo! Goodnights, Metafilter!
