An additional gem, from the Sun article:

Another spot attempts to link Democrats to a white supremacist who served as a Republican in the Louisiana Legislature, David Duke. The ad makes reference to Duke's trip to Syria last year, where he spoke at an anti-war rally.

"I can understand why a Ku Klux Klan cracker like David Duke makes nice with the terrorists,"a male voice in the ad says. "What I want to know is why so many of the Democrat politicians I helped elect are on the same side of the Iraq war as David Duke."

Look at the use of "tout suite." Do you think that's meant to take some of the heat out of the Katrina issue by identifying this monster with black New Orleanians, who, as we all know, have a French background?

I don't even know what to say.

I could say that the "Leave it to Beaver" shot at the end of Vernon whoever's campaign ad is a lot more telling than people probably realize - isn't it obvious that some people in this country would like to see us go right back to the 50s? No legal abortion or reliable birth control (other than total abstinence, of course), segregation, total faith in the government, no public acknowledgement of any lifestyle choices other than the 2.3 kids, dog, white picket fence. Only three heavily-regulated television channels, pornography kept in brown paper, behind the counter, where you can only get it if you know who and how to ask (and are wearing a trenchcoat, fedora and dark sunglasses). Women at home taking care of the spawn instead of (gasp!) having careers. No such thing as feminism, chicks have had the vote for a while, but everyone knows a real woman knows just how to influence her man to vote the right way, anyway.

The thing is, that genie is already out of the bottle (and the womb, and the closet), and he/she won't go back in.

I doubt this latest line of attack is going to work. My neighbor, an about-to-retire African-American lady who has worked in the federal government for most of her adult life, joked during a political discussion last week that if there isn't a MAJOR change from the midterms, and an even bigger one in 2008, she's going back to Africa. I think she'd be insulted by these ads, and frankly, so am I.

Save pimps' and hos' babies so they can grow up to vote Republican! Because those damn dirty lib'rals would have let your mommy and daddy kill you in the womb. Christ almighty.

Is this one of those things where a republican group makes a fake ad and the lets it "slip" to the media, and everyone gets really upset about it, but then the republicans let everyone know it was a fake because how could republicans possibly be so dense as to make a real ad like that and then say it was probably created by liberals who wanted to portray republicans as really dense?

'Cause I don't see how anyone could've made that ad in all sincerity. I mean, I'm not black, so maybe this sort of ad really is effective, but I kind of think it's more insulting.

Seems like every day, I say un-fucking-believable (and yet unsurprising) when I hear about the latest Republican stuff.

However, their base thrives on fear. They need something really scary, as a relative told me last night, the democrats want to get out of Iraq, so the bombs can start falling over here and not over there. This comes from a college-educated man who is convinced Al Qaeda is a mortal threat to the future of the United States, and the Democrats want to hand things over to Osama.

So, one really scary Islamic-related thing... and the Repubs are right back where they were-- every other debacle be damned.

Durhey, could be, but the timing is awfully tight. That type of thing usually works best with a bunch of lead time for indivdual processing. Early and absentee voting has begun in many places already. Whne are the Republicans going to denounce the ad/s ? next Tuesdays marks 2 weeks to the general election, a bit late for subtile.
I think it is real, and may have more backlash than assist.
2 weeks, geeze, almost time to start holding your breath that nothing huge comes down the pipeline, and there again it'd be all timing, too close to the election and people vote their intial emotional reaction which could be negative, so the next 10 days are the most crutial.

The ad is certainly not intended to win Blacks to the Republicans -- they put out token efforts, but the Republicans wrote off the Black population in 1968. It's plainly aimed at the people who think Blacks talk and act like that: white racists, who have been one of the Republican mainstays since the start of the "Southern Strategy."

"The main thing that America's Pac is up to is it basically is challenging the thesis or the belief on the part of the Republican Party that they cannot attract the black vote," Mr. Cain said. He said similar advertisements run in 2004 helped boost President Bush's share of the black vote in Ohio to 16%, from 9% in 2000.

"We don't believe that was an accident," Mr. Cain said. The IRS filing indicates that the ads are running this year in 10 battleground states, including Ohio, New Mexico, and Nevada.

Mr. Cain, who once managed the Godfather's Pizza chain and ran unsuccessfully for the Senate from Georgia in 2004, said he was not troubled that Mr. Rooney, who is white, is funding ads using black voices who claim to speak on behalf of the black community."You don't have a lot of black billionaires who would want to fund something like this," he said.

...

A New York investment banker who gave $10,000 to America's Pac last month, Peter Flanigan, told the Sun that he found the language in some of the abortion-related ads "a little strong."

"If it were me, I wouldn't have put the abortion one in those words," Mr. Flanigan said, before adding, "It's not as if it's totally apart from fact."

Asked why he supports the group, Mr. Flanigan said, "I think it's unfortunate that some 90% of African Americans vote Democratic … Rooney has had some success in moving African-American votes."

...

Many of the ads with conservative social themes are sandwiched between hip-hop songs that convey blunt sexual messages. A spokesman for America's Pac, John Altevogt, said no stations have refused the ads, but a few asked for minor edits, such as the removal of the word "cracker" from the David Duke spot.

It's disingenuous, to say the least, to suggest that "democrats started the KKK." The implication is that the KKK is a part of the democratic party, which it is/was not. Historically, segregationist southerners voted democrat, mostly because of a little thing called the civil war, but the democratic party has no affiliation with the KKK.

It's a little bit like saying that republicans "started" modern hate groups whose membership is more likely to associate itself with the most reactionary and nativist elements of the contemporary republican party.

Yes, Lincoln was indeed a republican.

Maybe I'm wrong, but I'm fairly certain that Black Man #2 (Dennis), in the ad was a white guy, making the ad slightly less racist, but still as stupid.

Also, the "advertisment" scripts have an awful lot of spelling errors in them. (Even the last sentence of the front page says "Please help us stay an ther air"

So I'm leaning away from "republican fake ad used to make republicans think democrats are making fake republican ads" and more towards "one small, poorly managed group writing and recording their own awful ads".

In 1952 the Solid South was Democratic (Wikipedia's using red for the Democratic candidate and blue for the Republican):

Things changed after President Johnson signed the Civil Rights Act of 1964, saying, "We have lost the South for a generation":

oops my mistake wfc123. I mispelled it. They deliberately used an anglicization which looks dumbed down.

My amusement remains intact.

What jamjam said. See how so many people are confused by this? Exactly. This isn't a pro-GOP message, it's disinformation meant to try and get a certain sector of the American people to stay at home. Which is repugnant.

GARDEN GROVE, Calif. (AP) — Orange County Republican leaders on Thursday called for the withdrawal of a GOP congressional candidate they believe sent a letter threatening Hispanic immigrant voters with arrest.

Tan D. Nguyen denied knowing anything about the letter in an interview Thursday with The Associated Press, but said he fired a campaign staffer who may have been responsible for it.

County Republican Chairman Scott Baugh, however, said that after speaking with state investigators and the company that distributed the mailer, he believes Nguyen had direct knowledge of "obnoxious and reprehensible" letter. He told the AP that the party's executive committee voted unanimously to Nguyen to drop out of the race against Democratic U.S. Rep. Loretta Sanchez...

But anyway, given all the convolutions in this thread about race and the intent/function of the radio ads, I thought the comment would be interesting.

Sometimes people have different threads going in different tabs and inadvertantly place a comment in the wrong one. My apologizes, since this is where you intended it. It is a damning incident to come from a member of the party of Lincoln.
posted by found missing at 5:22 PM on October 19, 2006

I haven't done that yet. I think whatever was left of the 'party of Lincoln' is now sitting sadly under a tattered banner in the Democrat's tent.
posted by taosbat at 6:03 PM on October 19, 2006

Indeed, taosbat. The facts that Lincoln was a Republican and that Democrats started the KKK have little bearing on the parties' current platforms. Republicans these days are supposed to be about, among other things, "states' rights", hardly a Lincoln plank.

Can we all get together sometime and work out a styleguide so we all know what's totally legit Ebonics and what's "a modern version of Amos'n'Andy"?

If you haven't already, it's worth following peeedro's link, just for the headline

"Black GOP Groups Woo Mfume to Back Steele"

which I had to read several times until I realised that in the headline,

- "Groups" is a noun, not a verb
- "Woo" is a verb, not Mr. Mfume's first name
- "Back" is a verb, not an adjective

Read it my way, it's fun!

Since most of the ads didn't get air time, FOX news provided the coverage free, with commentary from the authors and backers with no rebuttal. Here's the an analysis from media matters.

These are astounding. Wait until I tell my parents that all that marching on Selma, and facing down the dogs wasn't because they were outraged by a system that systematically discriminated against a huge segment of our population..but was indeed because they were racist klan members.

Good christ, do the republicans just have no shame?
