"You're all really f****d now!" Larry King just announced that the real execution could take place within the next half hour. Now we just wait and see if hell breaks loose.

This post was deleted for the following reason: no offense, but this post totally sucks.

I'm surprised it took this long. And I'm not surprised it's a shitty-ass post.

Riverbend:
Why make things worse by insisting on Saddam's execution now? Who gains if they hang Saddam? Iran, naturally, but who else? There is a real fear that this execution will be the final blow that will shatter Iraq. Some Sunni and Shia tribes have threatened to arm their members against the Americans if Saddam is executed. Iraqis in general are watching closely to see what happens next, and quietly preparing for the worst.

This is because now, Saddam no longer represents himself or his regime. Through the constant insistence of American war propaganda, Saddam is now representative of all Sunni Arabs (never mind most of his government were Shia). The Americans, through their speeches and news articles and Iraqi Puppets, have made it very clear that they consider him to personify Sunni Arab resistance to the occupation. Basically, with this execution, what the Americans are saying is "Look- Sunni Arabs- this is your man, we all know this. We're hanging him- he symbolizes you." And make no mistake about it, this trial and verdict and execution are 100% American. Some of the actors were Iraqi enough, but the production, direction and montage was pure Hollywood (though low-budget, if you ask me).

That is, of course, why Talbani doesn't want to sign his death penalty- not because the mob man suddenly grew a conscience, but because he doesn't want to be the one who does the hanging- he won't be able to travel far away enough if he does that.

The first ten people to post about this should get weeklong timeouts. After that, lifetime bannings!

This is so far outside the "best of the web" that it's hardly even newsfilter. It's OMG thing happened! (or is about to happen, in this case), let's chat about it! Followed by the sort of gossipy bullshit and bluster that makes a chatfilter AskMe look like award-winning FPP material.

in all seriousness, this is a godawful fpp ... a simple dignified announcement that it has happened should do, not some youtube southpark video

An adviser to Iraq's prime minister said Saddam Hussein's execution will occur in Baghdad at 9 p.m. today central standard time.

The time was agreed upon during a meeting between U.S. and Iraqi officials, the adviser said. The U.S. will hand over Saddam to Iraqi authorities shortly before the execution.

Also to be hanged at that time are Saddam's half-brother, Barzan Ibrahim, and Awad Hamed al-Bandar, the former chief justice of the Revolutionary Court.

Official witnesses began gathering in Baghdad's fortified Green Zone Friday night Baghdad time as the government readied the execution orders.

There have been conflicting reports of when the hanging would occur.

Saddam? How did we build up this street corner thug into the 21st century version of Hitler?

Who cares when he gets hanged? Nothing will change when he's dead, just like nothing changed when he was deposed and again when he ws caught. Saddam isn't part of the equation anymore.

Because a link to CNN, MSNBC or Fox News would be better?

Prediction: come 02/04/2007, we're going to have a Superbowl post. It'll probably be an one link post to the results (and I have no leg to stand on in this regard.)

These posts happen. This is what we do. I ain't going all Clayton Williams on your ass telling you to sit back and take it, but there's other dying lights more worthy of raging against.

There has been speculation that Hussein would be executed before Eid Al-Adha -- a holiday period that means Feast of the Sacrifice, celebrated by Muslims around the world at the climax of the hajj pilgrimage to Mecca.

There is a belief that the execution could be soon because the law does not permit executions to be carried out during religious holidays.

Eid begins Saturday for Sunnis and Sunday for Shiites and lasts for four days. Hussein is a Sunni Muslim. ...
If the hanging does occur on Saturday, it will "most likely take place between 6 a.m. and noon," he said. Those hours translate to 10 p.m. Friday and 4 a.m. Saturday in the Eastern United States.

It would have saved everyone an awful lot of trouble if Rumsfeld had managed to poison him when they were palling around in the 80s, instead of giving him weapons and reassuring him that the US didn't care if he used of WMD.

This frenzy, these after-the-fact announcements, are quite reminicent of the day Paul Bremer fled Baghdad. We tried to spin it like it was some grand historical triumph to hand over power to the Iraqi government, even though it was haphazard and seemed more like fleeing than any kind of orderly transition.

I'm with cyrano. This post isn't so bad.

US President George W Bush was evacuated from his ranch in Crawford after a tornado warning was issued in central Texas, officials said. Mr Bush, his wife Laura and their two dogs Barney and Miss Beazley were taken by armoured car to a tornado shelter on the property, the White House said.

Bush, however, did not make it to the storm shelter in time. He was hit on the head by a flying windowpane and was magically transported over the rainbow to the wonderful land of Oz.
