if you're planning on doing a bit of burglary, don't forget to steal the web camera as well. or risk international notoriety.

I have been thinking of setting up some sort of video surveilance system, i guess if it works for that guy it could work for me. It's a lot cheaper than any high tech system with video cameras.

The two guys haven't been caught yet, have they?

I wouldn't exactly say it worked if they haven't been caught.

Heh.. I like how he's changed the page to say "Wanted _____ or Alive"... wouldn't want anybody, you know, seizing his computer or something equally crazy like that.

I saw the story on the local news. The lawyers are saying that by publicly displaying the pictures on the web the guy may have ruined the chances of them being used as evidence in a court case.

In a similar vein, someone stole the webcam from the DNA Lounge of Jamie Zawinski fame.

howa: Although it hasn't 'worked' in the sense of catching the two guys, it certainly has worked in increasing the chance of their arrest. Having nice clear pictures of them will help the police enormously.
In general if you're going to do this sort of thing (use a web cam for security) then make sure you set it up in a way that gives you a good chance of a close up of their face. Anything else wont be much use.

...and preferably dumping the files to a remote server as well as the local drive, so if they run off with your computer you've still got backup. :-)

Which reminds me...what good would stealing just the webcam do?

Why?

if the pictures were the only evidence then they might not be able to be used, but if it was used by police or the public who have seen these people they i dont see how that can be dismissed. you also have to keep in mind that the australian legal system might be different.

Why?

Theoretically, (in the Australian legal system) a widely circulated picture may have the effect of prejudicing enough people so as to make the selection of a fair jury impossible.

Cases have been thrown out before on this kind of thing.
