NC Machining for the Masses

NC Machining for the Masses [CraftsmanBlue] Sears is now selling a Numerically Controlled Router for home use, giving the average, technically-inclined guy a way to produce intricately "carved" woodwork. I'm guessing CarveWright is selling far more of these through Sears than by themselves. True, this is not new technology, but at less than $2k, it is now within the reach of the home woodworker. Or if you want, just put an NC wood carving system together yourself

You know how people got all moist and retarded for the iPhone yesterday? I'm having that same reaction to this thing.

It's about time. Maybe I can now just wait a few months instead of frying my serial port again.

Wow - took me a minute to realize that a "router" here doesn't mean something that moves things through the interweb.

gwint... when I did my search, I hadn't yet found the CarveWright link D'oh!!. Nevertheless, I think the significance of this post is that it is being carried by Sears. The price is a definite selling point, but the fact that Sears is selling them is probably moreso.

Nevertheless, the fall of the Delete Hammer is probably imminent : \

If this thing is controllable through three axes, it might take a lot of the drudgery out of pipe carving.

Gimme three axes and I can control anything.

Clearly this poster has an axis to grind.

This thing controls the vertical, it controls the horizontal - it's at the outer limits of woodworking technology.

I was excited at first until I realized the z axis is so limited.

Can you get this at Sears?

Is it a little obvious to say that this is giving me intricately carved wood?

But does it have a touch screen and visual voice mail?

It's this kind of comment that makes me love you, MetaFilter.

hold it right there. your router....carves wood??? all mine does is direct data to appropriate machines.

I can't afford this, but I wouldn't mind having one.

On the homemade router page, dude discusses making this - possibly the most dangerous child's toy ever. The little silver thing in the maze there - a blob of mercury. Fun for the whole family!

Is that a real CNC wood carving machine, or is that a Sears CNC wood carving machine?

Alas, double.

When my wife told me she saw a segment on HGTV about this new machine and that it was being sold online by Sears, my first thought wasn't how cool it was but how I would probably see it double-posted on MetaFilter a few times over the next week or two.

God, why? There are other metals that stay liquid at room temperature
