Now you can look silly playing games AND DJing. Although this makes me want to hook my wiimote up to Reason.

Now the Jesus Pose is Fun AND Functional.

In all seriousness, though. There is a bit of a problem with making laptop DJing look interesting, and I think the Wiimote actually solves that problem. With auto time-locking and keymatching and stuff, this frees you up to have a lot more fun up there and actually look like you're doing something.

I like that it brings back a bit of the mystery to DJing. Though, this guy is very goofy.

Hey, somebody hire a DJ with good dance moves and a polished sense of showmanship, and this WiiJ-ing thing will be a ridiculous hit. Like the subtitles said, an awkward white kid dancing in his living room under bad lighting is just kind of silly (but doesn't make him a "dick," dydecker -- he's just giving a demo.) Find a well-coordinating breakdancing DJ (do those exist?), add some strobe lights and put him on a stage, and I bet it'd be at least kinda fun to watch.

When you make the formerly hard stuff trivial (see Traktor) you need to work off this base of new-found ease to find new hard things. I think this is a step in the right direction.

He'd look a lot less goofy in a nightclub.

All DJs who dance around and pretend like they're rock stars look silly though. This guy is no worse than many.

I know a dude who can DJ with RECORD PLAYERS!

Seems unpossible, yet it is not.
posted by Mister_A at 7:42 AM on February 2, 2007

There's no reason you couldn't combine this with record player DJing. Just map the wiimotes to filters and flangers, etc.
posted by empath at 7:49 AM on February 2, 2007

Now that would be cool! Honestly.

To me it ain't DJ'ing unless you're scratchin'.

NB: I have not been in a club in at least 10 years.

I like cheese! And this is a cute link. It's still fun to rag on the Wii-J dude though, especially his stupid name, which will go the way of "all your X are belong to Y", only more quickly and less publicly.

i respect a good DJ. i do not respect a computer store clerk looking dude who thinks he's doing something revolutionary by triggering Salt n Pepa tracks with his television remote control. To then film yourself explaining all this with a straight face and then putting it all up on a website called "the art of djing" - maybe it would be okay if he was fourteen years old - but look at him he has facial hair even. get a clue.

WiiJ mastery

Sorta. I can't tell if this guy is any good or not cuz I like Van Halen (DLR version only).

Good god people, this isn't going to affect real dj's and no one is saying it will. It's amazing that some mefites are so damn cool they can't see the fun in this.

Don't make me hurt you. Thankfully, I just happened to post a new mix I can pimp, which you can get here as proof that nerds can DJ.

Without a Wiimote. Please. Don't be ridiculous.

DJing is simply the art of playing of songs in sequential order. The tools are secondary.

That's like saying somebody who uses Word instead of pencil and paper to write his novel is 'just typing'.

Heh, I think this is hilarious, and it reminds me of how wonderful people are--we will take any perfectly good, well-designed tool, and immediately repurpose it for something completely different than it was originally intended. This post made me smile.

I think your urban dictionary needs some updating, at least the entry for 'DJ'--they stopped playing songs in sequential order about 10 years ago....see: IDM.

very much so. which is why when someone like this clown fetishizes the tools, and overlooks the music part, it is not interesting in the slightest.

i don't think there's really much doubt as to the 'fun to serious output' ratio here (the learning curve on traktor doesn't really lend itself to anyone being the next flare, anyway). not that hasn't been touched upon.

that said, can wiitomidi even adjust much more than slider/dial values? maybe this should be in the green, but still.
i paid $40 for the damn thing, there's no reason i shouldn't be able to make music (or, more appropriately, fuck music up) with it, right?

I dj'd with vinyl for ten years and went head first into the clip with enthusiasm. To be confronted with salt'n'pepa was not a good start to the sell for me.

anyone who has beatmixed with vinyl is automatically gonna snark. that shit aint easy and is steeped in its own bubbly broth as the only true dj'ing.

however, now I have a family and would happily trade his set-up for my lone 360 and the copy of Rainblow Six I am trying to get enthused about.
