Now I have Kalinka stuck in my head, dammit.

I've got to go with the Red Army Choir on this one- they have a fantastic version of Chapayev the Hero Waged War in the Urals. Couldn't find it on youtube, though.

I also have many fond memories of international hockey in the 70s and 80s which will always be conjured up by the old Soviet anthem.

Socialists vs Mormons? On Metafilter? Not hard to predict who's gonna win that one.

I don't know, are the Soviets really that popular here? We're the Blue, not the Red....

Rocky: [Addressing the Soviet crowd, translated into Russian line by line by announcer]

Rocky: During this fight, I've seen a lot of changing, in the way you feel about me, and in the way I feel about you. In here, there were two guys killing each other, but I guess that's better than twenty million. I guess what I'm trying to say, is that if I can change, and you can change, everybody can change!

Rocky: [loud applause, even by the politburo]

Red Army Choir. Their performances are more... powerful. And they've got The Leningrad Cowboys, which just adds to that.

Soviet National Anthem:

"through tempests the sunrays of cheered us"

Wow, almost got it there. Almost.

Yes, but the Mormons have special armor-underwear. No one ever expects that.

Well, I liked Gimme all your lovin' best, but it's kind of an unfair advantage to have the LC's playing with you.

Straight up, head-to-head, my favorite (against all odds) of the links is MTC's Battle Hymn of the Republic. I found it stirring, despite how easy it would be to make fun of it. I was actually underwhelmed by the RAC, and I like all-male choirs usually.

Send the LC's to Salt Lake City and then you'll see something special.

Thanks for the videos. I had never imagined what the LC's looked like. I had only experienced them from the Christmas decoration house lighting extravaganza.

Ah, but for the Red Army Choir with the Leningrad Cowboys, we have Song of the Volga Boatmen.

Which will now replace "Kalinka" in my head.

Whatever. The Red Army Choir would totally beat the Mormon Tabernacle Choir in a chugging contest. Really, isn't that the only kind of contest that matters?

I'm all smiles: excellent post, Stxy!

"Socialists vs Mormons? "
for what its worth, the mormons believe that in the last days, we'll all live under "the united order" which was the holy version of communism/socialism. They tried it out a few times, but always managed to muck it up. Their whacky socialism is also a small part of what they were so intensly disliked/distrusted.

It's been a long time since I saw Leningrad Cowboys Go America, but I remember feeling like dancing throughout.
