A little music to add to the video linked to, which sadly doesn’t have any audio.

I find it hilarious to consider Holi from a fundamendalist, closedminded point of view. Especially because on that sacriligious pagan weirdo holiday, "Holi" they all feast on a tasty foreigner's snack, "Barfi."

I am trying to figure out how to celebrate this awesome springtime event near me. Any advice would be great.

Happy Holi day!

I was always fond of the Rajput paintings (murals, sometimes, but more often miniatures) showing the local Maharaja indulging in a bit of holi spraying-of-coloured water.

Only, unlike the plebs & their pissy little squirters, the Maharaja is seated on an elephant, and his waterpistol is a fucking cannon, pumped by a number of manservants, or watercannonbellowswallahs.

Maharaj: "Ha! ha! ha! harh! Your puny waterpistols are no match for my MahaSoaker!" *squirts plebs from unassailable elephant howdah*

Ambrosia, you might want to try the Students Union Assembly and see if they have anything planned for their Hindu students on that day, or the Hindu community. The closest temple near you doesn’t seem to have anything on their cards though, but you might want to give them a ring and see what turns up. Also, why not have a Holi Party in your backyard, with a couple of your close friends and family. Don’t know about the sweets (is there an Indian confectionery close by to where you live?), but you can certainly douse each other with loads and loads of coloured water!

Thanks for the tips and resources, hadjiboy! I live close enough to lots and lots of Indian Americans (Silicon Valley) that I bet I could dig up a temple to go to, I just don't want to be too much an outsider. I have a huge unnatural pulsing appropriative hard-on for Indian culture. Must be my English heritage. (ew.) I could totally make the barfi myself, I can make a lot of other Indian dishes and desserts, but I do need to find a source for gulal. (I think I let Holi creep up onme this year. I'll pan ahead next year!!)
