Can you recommend any articles in particular? (not a critisism of the post, just not sure where to look as a lay person with a vague and general interest in technology).

These aren't really for lay persons, but they are fun reads all the same:
Braids and fibers: Language constructs with architectural support for adaptive responses to memory latencies
HeapMon: A helper-thread approach to programmable, automatic, and low-overhead memory bug detection
Discovering actionable patterns in event data
Predictive algorithms in the management of computer systems

Sweet. I read Systems Journal for years when I used to do mainframe sysadmin. Alas, since retirement, the technology has passed me by.
