Bluegrass

Bluegrass singer Alison Krauss is set to hit the road with Union Station in support of A Hundred Miles or More. A melancholic singer, she was involved with singing a sad song about alcohol, suicide and infidelity.

In other news, a band I like is also touring.

I likes me some banjo pickin', and I likes me some banjo pickin' gals, but I need a little more substance to this post would be good too.

Whoa, that made even less sense than I thought it would.

Established artist tours behind compilation CD. Artist once sang a duet that failed to reach #1 on the country charts. Totally FPP worthy.

I'm not sure where you are from, but this is big news where I am from, not because of the band, but because it is a voice that resonates the issues of working class people. Maybe it won't be of interest to many, but I've met, literally met, hundreds of people that simply couldn't make it day to day (suicidal) without bluegrass informing them that they aren't they only ones suffering. Maybe my experience causes a bias, but I'm simply posting what is an interesting link from my experience, and saving people from suicide is pretty big in my opinion. You are free to disagree.

GN, this post will probably be poorly received.

Generally, the best posts are some wicked awesome website that someone has found.

This post, featuring a couple wikipedia links, an artist's official site, and a couple press releases, does not serve to pass along "the best of the web."

This post might even be deleted. Not a big deal. You may want to consider lurking a little bit before making another FPP. It's easier to have a feel for after hanging around for a bit.

Seriously? Sicne I think this post is weak I'm encouraging suicide?

Sorry GN, but aside from your personal anecdotes the link between Bluegrass and suicide is sorta tenuous.

For the record:
I like Bluegrass.
I like Alison Krauss.
I dislike suicide.

Oh, as a suicide enthusiast, now I see why we have a different take on whether or not this is a good FPP.

Look, by that rationale, I could post an FPP to a health care provider. But that's not what Metafilter is for.

I'm with you on bluegrass and suicide, but I just can't agree on Alison Krauss. If I can't have one of the real classics, gimme Gillian Welch any day.

Thank you for the advice. I seem to be overwhelmed by the nuances of Metafilter and the blog/forum format.

Sorry GN, but aside from your personal anecdotes the link between Bluegrass and suicide is sorta tenuous.

I dunno. It is such a huge deal around here, perhaps I am just letting the offline world influence the online world. I'm not saying anything about pro/anti suicide. I'm simply saying that working-class/poor, offline people are acting as if this is a huge deal, and that made me take notice. Perhaps the offline world that I know is widely different than the online world. If it is to be deleted, I can accept that. I can't deny the pervasive emotional tide sweeping the minds of rural and poor communities and it seems to radical and interesting--to me.

Bela Fleck's music makes me suicidal. Bill Monroe's doesn't. It's a wash.

What would've made this a better FPP - or one that wouldn't have people bitching at you - is if you'd started with an Alison Krauss link, and then followed it with some bluegrass history links, maybe. Especially if those links inlcuded heretofore unknown online troves of bluegrassy goodness. Something like that, anyway. Otherwise, why wouldn't I just post my favorite band's Web site, and claim that they, too help people not kill themselves?

I like Alison Krauss, but this is not FPP material.

Except Gillian Welch doesn't play bluegrass.
