Nice Ass! Jon Katz describes why he owns and loves his donkeys. Follow-up: what happened when Lulu fell during an ice storm.

The closest I've ever come to this was the pack mule in Dungeon Siege. The poor thing sure did panic easily.

I suspect that a robot donkey would be less emotionaly satisfying, but would also avoid some rare but rather awkward situations (possibly NSFW).

Unreal, that farmer is Jon Katz, who used to write technology columns for Hotwired and Slashdot. I didn't know he changed gears and wrote about animals now. Nice story.

IIRC, Katz used to cover the pet animals beat before he got hired at Slashdot. I'm pretty sure that was why his coverage of technology was as 'insightful' as it invariably was.

WTF Jon Katz? That is quite a surprise. Also, he's now over 50? That explains a lot about his style of tech journalism.

Thanks for pointing this out - one of the great mysteries of life has been solved.

I knew a girl from Boston, Mass. She had a magnificent ass.

It wasn't round and pink - as you probably think.

It was grey. Had long ears. And ate grass.

...when Lulu fell during an ice storm.

Damn, I was hoping this would've been about the "To Sir With Love" singer instead. She was the hotness.

Aha! I knew the name sounded familiar, but I was tired and couldn't place it. Thanks.

I wondered if that was the same Jon Katz as well. Knowing he's not really a techie and he's older than I thought explains his reactions to my emails to him a few years ago, when he wrote that book on those geek kids from Idaho. I pointed out a dozen or more technical inaccuracies in the book and the blew me off and kind of mocked me.

Mocked our noble leader! Good lord. What could he have been thinking?

Katz wrote this book about moving to the country when the 1900s came to an end, and he turned 50, and he got into that, you know, midlife thing. (Which I myself hope to hit soon, after I escape this extended adolescence.)

Wow, Katz sounds like, well, a jackass.

His writings on his new life are nice, though. I'm glad he's moved on to something he likes more and is still sharing with the rest of the world.

I want a donkey someday.

I only know Jon Katz from his essays on salon. I have really enjoyed them, although at times felt like he was this priviledged guy pretending to be a farmer. He is not a farmer, he has a hobby farm. Well more power to him I guess. I think his heart is in the right place and his essays are really touching. I recommend them highly. I was about to pick some out to recommend, but I can't, they are all great. The whole donkey thing I love. I want him to get some goats next. Those are some crazy animals.
