What is a DJ if he can't scratch? What is an MC if he can't rap?

Hip hop history— It's the Rub! Along with a handful of other shows, Brooklyn hip hop lovers The Rub compile a history of hip hop. Eleven parts through 1989.
Now I don't have to scream "I can't find the hip hop I need" at the top of my lungs. Thank you, klangklangston.

Nice post. I finally picked up a copy of James Chang's Can't Stop Won't Stop recently, which I would recommend to anyone needing a social overview of the Bronx in the 70s or LA in the late 80s/early 90s (the 15th anniversary of the riots is tomorrow, April 29th, by the way), but mainly what it reminded me is that I love the music that I started with from the early 80s. Kurtis Blow, Afrika Baambaataa, Grandmaster Flash, Funky 4 + 1... that music always makes me happy.

Not to be outdone by DJ Jaguar Skills' 1979-2006: A Hip-Hop Odyssey (800 Tracks in 48 Minutes) megamix.

Thanks for reminding me that Hip-Hop was once once vibrant and innovative.

tighttrousers: Really? None of these are vibrant and innovative: Edan, Dälek, J Dilla, Ghostface Killah, El-P, Clipse, Prefuse 73, RJD2, The Streets, Kanye West, the whole of the Anticon crew, Danger Mouse..?
That's just off the top of my head...

basicchannel, some people just need to make sure that you know that they know that they think they actually know something. It's OK, don't let it bother you.

Well, c'mon, everybody knows that tight trousers and hiphop just don't go together! When was the last time you saw a hiphop artist in tight trousers, fer chrissakes?

For some more fun, take yourself back to 1986 and Mr. Magic's Rap Attack on WBLS.
