Lawyers fail to fulfill social duties Thank the good lord we do not have a similar problem in the United States!

Crazy! In the article, Jack Straw (who, as Home Secretary is, among other things, is the British equivalent to the US Attorney General) says that there are too many criminal defense lawyers and that they are too good at getting their clients off.

Amazing what New Labour can get away with saying ... John Ashcroft would be pilloried for saying something along those lines, to say the least of a Democrat. (Indeed, any article with such a headline in the US would be attacking private practice lawyers for failing to provide enough pro bono time for poor people, and for the government for providing too little staff and funds for the defense of accused criminals.
