Wild Kingdom face off - lions vs. buffalo vs. crocs

Animal Face Off! A herd of buffalo battle a pride of lions and two crocodiles. Like "The Warriors" at a watering hole.
Did anyone notice the alligator in the water? That was intense.

Elated by the happy ending, the humans went back to the hotel's dining room and ordered the veal scaloppine.

Wow. the way the buffalo came up with that plan was pretty amazing. I was really hoping for the croc to play a bigger role at the end...

THIS is why I have 13 discovery channels at home. To me, animals are way more interesting than people. It's really a jungle out there. We've got it pretty easy.

Those looking for spoiler: Buffalo walk up nodding their head as if to say "bring it on!'
lions take calf, buff take it back by the equivalent of cold-cocking one of the ones standing guard. He flies about 15 feet. I missed the croc-hard to see.

It was amazing to see how, after the herd made a decision to go back and get the calf, several of the members at the front of the herd's 'wall', freaked out and turned tail as soon as they were close to the lions--but several showed independence and challenged the lions directly. Wow. Great link, thanks.

Poor lions. Carnivores gotta eat, too.
But those crocs can go straight to hell. Freeloaders!

Lion Leader: You buffalo are good. Real good.
Buffalo: The best.
Great video, but I was hoping they'd chase the lions into the water too.

The counterattack by the buffalo demonstrates intelligence enough to make me reconsider eating burgers. Best single link youtube post ever.

I was hoping the buffalo would chase one of the lions into the water, where it would be attacked by a crocodile.

Bad day: you're the rope in a tug-of-war between a crocodile and a pride of lions.
Good day: you walk away.

Jesus H. Christ, that's insane. It seems like it must be pretty rare for prey animals to display that kind of initiative/intelligence. Am I wrong about that?

Self Defense Rules of Nature:
When in doubt—attack. And. NEVER negotiate a hostage crisis.
What a microcosm. That video went from simple predation to a surprise opportunistic tug of war between like combatants. The crocodile had a superior advantage in surprise and range/position (IE: water) so much so that it could take a pride of lions completely by surprise mid hunt. IF it could drive them to it's environment it would be eating buffalo and the lions would still get curb stomped by the herd.
Then it suddenly spun to a hostage crisis a where the buffaloes did not negotiate or hesitate as expected - swarmed and attacked the lions splintering the unit cohesion of the predators.
And then it ended with an ego stand off when a member of losing side couldn't except defeat.
Also note the one lion, second to last, was wounded by the Croc. Why it stayed put for so long. Got to give to it's buddy for hanging tight so long with her. Never leave a sister behind.

Amazing video. Yes, I realize that the lions need to eat, and that the "circle of life" must continue -- but it sure did feel good to see the buffalo come back to rescue one of their own. Score one for the buffs!

**** Interesting change of pace: A nature film where the little herbivore actually survives, saving parents everywhere the task of comforting their crying children with the bitter words of "that's how nature is, honey." Three cheers for the screenwriters!
The camera work could have been better, though. :grumble:

Yes, hooray for the buffalo. But remember this: there were about ten times as many buffalo as lions, and they each have a significant size advantage. You can get a sense for just how much a buffalo can p0wn a lion in the video when the bull catches one lion under his horns and sends him spinning five feet in the air. Multiply that times a hundred. The really amazing thing is that they weren't more aggressive sooner.
Self Defense Rules of Nature
More like, how to deal with bullies. Step one: just take it. Step two: run away. Step three: amass numbers. Step four: counterattack.

Civil_Disobediant: That thought crossed my mind as well, but I chalked it up to how much time it perhaps took to get your crucial Step 3 together. Amassing the numbers. Might've been a lot of apathetic buffalo at first, who really had to get a good pep talk before they'd commit to going up against the big cats.
