MySpace MP3 Downloader

MySpaceMP3.org allows anyone to download any MP3 on MySpace for free. In many cases, these are the same MP3s bands are trying to sell via MySpace's relatively new Snocap service. Trouble for MySpace?

As in, I can't imagine how this is legal. And since MySpace was bought by Fox, which has crap loads of money and lawyers, I don't see how this site will be up for very long. Also, scamming poor artists on MySpace seems kind of lame.

This has to be corporate, it uses Microsoft asp.

then perhaps it's a corporate honeypot for mp3 thieves?

Well, not exactly. MySpace doesn't own the copyright to the songs on the site, so individual artists or record companies are going to have to request removal.

A lot of the artist probably wouldn't even mind letting people download the tracks, since (unless this has changed) letting people download isn't even an option, and you have to pay for an extended play list. The whole thing is really bullshit designed to squeeze every last penny out of the artists and listeners, and that's why myspace will go down in flames eventually (or I hope, anyway).

Letting people download your mp3s is indeed an option on MySpace.

There are enough artists under huge labels on MySpace that this type of thing is probably looked after.

If you are joking, thsi is quite funny, if not: WTF?

Well, at least according to these people (admittedly not the most authoritative source imaginable) all the streaming mp3s on MySpace are 96kbit-encoding, which makes the prospect of being able to download them a tiny little less enticing.

Why wouldnt this be legal? If you are streaming data to my computer I can certainly record it and put it any container I like. If that data is some kind of music encoding and I end up with an mp3 then everything is fine. Dont like it? Don't stream.

The only problem here is that they are using "MySpace" in their URL and name which clearly infringes on Fox's trademark.

Herr Fahrstuhl, you are absolutely right. I've uploaded 320kbit files to my artist account in the past and been dismayed by how thoroughly awful they sounded after the compression. Downloading MP3s from Myspace is pretty much one step up from taping them off the radio.

That said, I give this site just under a week before the C&D order arrives.

yeah except pages like these usually just access and download the streaming version which is at best 96kbps... i doesn't secretly download some sort of secret stash of mp3.... (of course i didn't bother to rtfa before getting snarky so ymmv.)

This would be cooler if it worked.

Oh, wait, here it goes. Neat!

This is awesome. I was just about to go buy Audio Hijack to get my new favorite band's tracks. Sweet!

I need to register iwillwhistleyourfavoritetunes.com, and provide free downloads of me...well, you know.

Yeah, but if this is anything like the YouTube downloaders, there will be a dozen sites replicating the functionality of this site shooting up before this one goes down.

But then again, the radio don't play much music no more.

Artists can easily enable downloads on Myspace.

There were some other ways of doing the very same thing, and MySpace kept changing things so that the programs/tricks wouldn't work.

Entirely true, but if you're going to go to the trouble of downloading music off Myspace through a third-party site, you might as well get a P2P client or just use BitTorrent and have access to much more than four songs per artist. If the artist isn't popular enough to be on P2P or BitTorrent yet, you can probably get them to enable track downloading (or post higher-quality files) by leaving a comment. Seems like an awful lot of work for a very small reward, but then, that kind of sums up Myspace too.

I actually put my music on MySpace, and most of it is not supposed to be downloadable. So this site is somewhat obnoxious, IMO.

That said, it's very easy to record non-downloadable songs on MySpace. Windows users can set their sound recording option to Stereo Mix... then use a program like Audacity (which is free) to capture a song.

But songs on MySpace are so compressed that you're not getting a great-quality recording.

I believe this 'tool' is completely legal, but the uses of it may be illegal.
