This list dosen't seem that different from most men's magazines' list of beautiful women, which means what? That standards of beauty aren't that different across sexual lines? Although, I've been hit on by gay men more times than by straight women, FWIW. But that says more bout gender than it does about sexuality or attractiveness.

to clarify: gay men are gay, but they're still men, meaning if they're horny enough they'll hit on anything. which is kind of what I was getting at with my playful jab at serazin there: that gayness dosen't automatically endow nobility on one's preferences in looks.

jonmc: Halle Berry isn't in the top ten on either list.

Still, the argument seems spurious... a list of ten celebrities has only a 10% representation of black people. Well, the celebrities are almost exclusively from the US or UK, which have 12.3% (as of 2000) and 2% (as of 2001) black populations, respectively. If you want to count Canadian representation on the list, that's also about 2% (2001). So one-out-of-ten seems as close an "appropriate representation" as one could expect if one were intentionally constructing the list around ethnicity.

The argument that the featured members are light-skinned is more fair, but I feel it's pretty shaky moral ground to be criticizing racism and then turning around and implying that some people aren't black enough.

On preview: what Rubbstone said, essentially.

Not that I blame them... they're Maxim, I'm hardly going to hold them to high standards of objectivity or professional ethics (although "Second Life Girl?" seriously???). But I wanted to clarify that this topic isn't a comparison between "lesbian taste" and "straight guy taste" by any stretch of the imagination.

I've always thought that magazines like this are for closeted gay men, since they very often feature ridiculously skinny women with not much in the way of hips or boobs or butts (like Jessica Alba). It's easier to hide your homosexuality from your frat brothers if the woman you're masturbating to could be Orlando Bloom's body double.

Case in point: Diora Baird. Beautiful woman with, you know, curves, and they make her wear a shirt that flattens her chest as much as possible. What the hell?

I'm reasonably straight, and I like women who look like women. I'll never understand straight guys who like scrawny, underfed women.

Wake me up when someone who looks like Lea Delaria cracks the top twenty.

“I'm reasonably straight, and I like women who look like women. I'll never understand straight guys who like scrawny, underfed women.”

I strongly prefer skinny women. It's certainly not a preference I chose. But I think there's a fairly plausible explanation for this preference, independent of cultural ideals and media images (which certainly play a very large role): skinny women look more like adolescent women.

In my case, it's not at all that skinny women look like men. Because I can say with certainty that skinny women don't look anything at all like men to my eyes.

But I also strongly prefer "cute" to "beautiful/sexy", which is also obviously an adolescent characteristic. I think that for some reason my ideal of feminine beauty got "stuck" at the adolescent stage. In retrospect, I wonder if this isn't just chance side-effect of my maturing sexuality. As an adult, I don't have even as remotely a powerful sex-drive as I did as an adolescent. During my teen years, I thought about almost nothing else than girls. And girls' bodies. I can still quite easily recall the intensity of this attraction.

Maybe I was no more this way than the typical teen male. But I've never felt as strongly about women and sex as an adult as I did as a teen. So adolescent women remained the paragon of sexual attractiveness in my unconscious. This has translated into a preference for skinnier and cuter women by me as an adult. That's just a theory.

Speaking of this ideal, though...Scarlett Johansson. Wow. I've only recently noticed some photos of her and how amazingly beautiful and attractive she is to me.

I hate this theory, because I am a scrawny, underfed women

liquorice, I feel like sort of a jerk now, and I'm sorry if I made it seem like I think (a) only one kind of woman is attractive, or (b) thin women aren't attractive, or even (c) anyone in their right mind should give a shit about what I find attractive. It'd be totally reasonable for someone to read my comment that way.

In the long run, you're right: It doesn't matter at all if someone likes fat people or skinny people or busty women or guys with broad shoulders or vice versa or whatever. I'd never judge someone based on what they're attracted to.

I've been sitting here a while trying to think of a way to better say what I'm trying to say, but I can't. I guess what it boils down to is this:

* Conventional Wisdom more or less holds that straight males respond to boobies. Women flash their racks to get better tables in restaurants, women are always having to say things like "my eyes are up here," et cetera et cetera.

* Maxim and its ilk are magazines that present an unreasonable standard of beauty to straight men. I think we all more or less agree on this tacitly before beginning this discussion. I mean, we're not Fark, right?

* It seems strange to me that when Maxim would make its "Hot 100" list (which, Christ, fuck you, Maxim), it would decide to include a voluptuous woman, yet go to lengths to de-ephasize her breasts and hips.

*I don't friggin' get it. Maxim's market research is broader than my personal experience, so it sort of bears out that what men really want are skinny women without a speck of fat on them anywhere.

*That is all.

I believe that men do this because I've seen them do this and because I've heard women frequently describing/complaining about how men do this. But I don't. I hardly notice a woman's breasts. I don't look at her behind, either. All I really concentrate on is the face. So I wonder if that isn't a factor in the skinny thing.

Suddenly I'm wondering if women think I'm gay or just plain weird because I don't look at their breasts when I'm talking to them. Surely other men are like me, aren't they?

EB, I never used to pay that much attention to breasts, apparently I'm naturally an "L&A man"... but that changed after I had a longish relationship with a woman with really rather nice largish breasts. So now, I notice them a lot more.

Then again, I notice them a lot less than some of my friends, who apparently can't see any part of a woman but her breasts; that's where they start on their visual appreciation.

I start with the face first, always. :)

To be honest, I am a great admirer of one particular aspect of female anatomy. But I'm usually not able to focus on it until we're in the bedroom. :)

“It's weird, because I find my own attraction to big breasts and big butts kind of embarrassing and worry that people will think I'm childish. You mentioned adolescence earlier; I wonder if most people would find your tastes more mature than mine.”

I think the two things are separate, at least in the sense that's important to your statement. So many men focus on big breasts and butts that if that makes them childish, it'd be effectively saying that most men are childish. Which, come to think of it, is something I've heard occasionally from women.

I heard a theory, this is just a theory, mind you, that men who are usually attracted to the "scrawny, underfed women" are those who are deeply insecure, awkward around women and didn't get much during high school so they gravitate towards the body types that most resemble a male's.

I'm a deeply insecure, awkward around women guy who didn't get much (in fact zero) during high school and I much prefer curvy, Sara Ramirez types to the stick-figures.

Just sayin'.,

Wow re: Tina Fey. Who knew so many guys had the hots for her? I learn something new every day.

(There's a copy of the FHM "Women of Buffy" issue hidden in the house somewhere -- Charisma Carpenter, mrrrrow!)

Regarding the "my eyes are up here" thingie, I thought I'd throw out there that I'm a lesbian with big boobs. I've had to poke more girlfriends in the ribs to look up and pay attention to what I'm saying than I've had to chide boyfriends (back when I had them).

A bit of lechery is kind of cute on girls, tho. And there I go being sexist again.

It's nice to hear about women with whom I truly have so much in common!!

Neve Campbell, Katee Sackhoff, Liv Tyler in the final quarter?

Lesbians, I may have dreamed of being one of you, but we are many miles apart. My most sincere apologies, yours in disappoinment, the surprisingly red-blooded and not-a-lesbian-in-a-man's-body

PS. I know that no list can please every woman, but Chan Marshall should earn some merit honour. I mean, good grief ladies, Sandra Oh is on the list!

I thoroughly disapprove of the inclusion of Alyson Hanigan but not Emma Caulfield.

I also found it interesting that they had a picture of Lucy Lawless as a blonde, Sarah Michelle Gellar as a brunette and uh, Stockard Channing in a bad wig.

40 Clea DuVall is the only picture that to me, straight male, has a lesbians-only vibe.

a bit late to the party here. linked from another thread...

gotta say that i was surprised by how incredibly straight the afterellen list looked.

i know more dykes than you could poke a stick at, and it wasn't until #96 (Jackie Warner) that i came across a woman who looked like she actually belonged to the scene (surprise, surprise: she is a dyke - asterisks in the list indicate gay/bi women).

Pink might fit in too, but apart from that, it was pretty much all the same hollywood tabloid fodder that you would expect from any mens' favourites list (the older women excepted).

maybe i'm just exposed to a particularly butch crowd, or maybe things are different in america, but we watch shows like the L Word & complain "what's with all these hollywood model types? why didn't they cast women who actually look like lesbians...?"
