Flickr in Iran

The Iranian Flickr group celebrates the 1 year anniversary of their first meetup. This is kind of impressive because Flickr is banned in Iran. I love how resourceful people can be.

Good for them.

Unfortunately, this is what is happening to the Flickr.com community in Iran and in the United Arab Emirates, where, a few weeks ago — and for the third time — the Internet service provider, Etisalat, decided to ban access to Flickr after the UAE Flickr community fought so hard to get it back.

Let's not single out Iran for censorship. The UAE sent forces to "liberate" Kuwait during the 1990–91 Persian Gulf War so this means there are at least two enemies of the late Saddam Hussein who censor Flickr. I wonder if this will be a trend.

Wait, what does Saddam Hussein have to do with....oh, I get it.

It's also recently been censored in China. They let you surf the site, but block the pictures, which seems like a bigger disrespect.

Yep, that was a really weird thing to find chunking; I've been saved by the Firefox addon these fine Iranian users created, so my thanks to them. And a big fuck you to the censors.

Interestingly, flickr is aperantly self censoring in certan parts of the world, including singapore, germany and some other places. "Save search" (which blocks all pornographic pictures, regardless of whether you are searching or browsing) is turned on in those places, and can't be disabled.

A bunch of flickr pr0n makers are putting up these 'protest' pictures.

Apparently the reason there is that these countries have laws that are strict about making sure minors can't see naked people, and Yahoo has to comply with them. Or something anyway. I wrote about it on my Blaarg because the people protesting were so damn annoying.
