The Earthquake as Artist
"A shop in Port Townsend, Washington had a sand pendulum going when last week's earthquake struck. One usually thinks of earthquakes as resulting in a net increase in entropy, but in this instance the outcome was something akin to fine art". via TBTF

I don't know if I'd call it "something akin to fine art," really, but the photos are rather pretty -- it's the scientific explanations that make them great.

I spent a good half hour looking at the photos over the weekend and reading the explanation. I was wondering if there were other photos like this from other quakes, like the '89 San Francisco? How do or would they compare?

There are a lot of possibilities for similar experiments that I'd like to see the results from, squirt different colored paint on the ground before a big storm, etc. Very neat.
