Sad...

Yeah. My older brother used to play with him quite a bit. The strangest thing about it is how everyone, including his girlfriend. seems to agree about how out of character the violence was. Apparently it really was a reaction to some anti-smoking medication he was taking.

Wow, it's crazy that this ended up on metafilter. I actually have a lot to say about this but I think it's kinda late to go on in detail so I'll type what I can.

One of Carter's bandmates and his roommate, Danny Balis, is a popular radio producer on a local sports radio station here. A couple days after Carter's death he came on the station with Ward Williams to issue a statement. They essentially said that Carter had never had any prior incidences with domestic violence and that his actions were a surprise to everyone. They went on to say that Carter had been on a new anti-smoking medication called Chantix and that they believed that the medication combined with his alcohol consumption resulted in him basically going psychotic. As they they and his girlfriend tell it, Carter started to act strange after driving back from a bar with his girlfriend. Once they got back to his girlfriends house he flipped out and hit the girlfriend then cut himself on a broken glass. He eventually got locked out of the house and was so disoriented that he mistook the neighbors house for the house of his girlfriend and tried to break in the back door. That's when he was killed.

I could say a lot more about this, but as I said it's way too late.

That sucks.

The thing about smoking is that it kills you a lot slower than a bullet in the head.

There was an AskMeFi on Chantix.

From scouting the web, the most likely side effects are the same as nicotine withdrawal.

FWIW, this isn't the first time that Chantix (or Champix in Europe) and alcohol have been linked to such episodes. I guess Carter (rip, natch) is high profile enough to get the FDA to investigate into the matter.

For those of you that feel morbid, you can hear the 911 call from the incident here.

It's a damn shame, on so many levels.

As the FDA continues its investigation, I hope Navelgazer will come back and add the tags for this drug.

"He was trying to shoot over his head to scare him away," but Mr. Albrecht "is rather tall," said Sgt. Larry Lewis, a homicide supervisor, estimating the musician's height to be 6-foot-5.

Shit.

reminds me of Jaco Pastorious very sad needless death.

The Pastorius case was worse. The homeowner had some reason to fear Albrecht -- a guy trying to kick his way into his home in the middle of the night -- and at least he tried to miss, or so he says, but the damned bouncer who beat Pastorius to death had no reason to fear or hurt him.

That is sad. I'm sure the neighbor is upset as well. Tragic.

Seems irresponsible to me to shoot through a closed door. I know in Texas you can shoot folks for looking at your wrong but it doesn't seem right.

Yeah, I can't imagine how shooting could ever be construed as the right response here. Seriously, I'm sorry, but the door was locked, the guy was beating on it with his hands (not sneaking around & not breaking through with an axe) and 911 had already been called and the police were presumably on their way. Why the fuck would you then start shooting? It's so horrifyingly out of proportion, so tragic and so awful.

I don't like guns, but if you were woken by your panicked wife who told you that someone was actively trying to break through a door, you'd maybe not be in the most careful and analytical frame of mind. An enraged person bashing on a door sounds pretty loud and scary from the other side.

Wood: "Seems irresponsible to me to shoot through a closed door. I know in Texas you can shoot folks for looking at your wrong but it doesn't seem right."

Ah. So when defending oneself in one's home, one must time it just right so that you shoot the guy after he opens the door and barges in but just before he disarms you and rips your limbs off. Got it. I'll keep that in mind.

I never knew Carter Albrecht personally, but I've mourned the death of the Dallas music scene's soul for a decade now, and I shall add his name to those lives lost.

Fortunately the stories of the others lost are much happier and also less newsworthy. Most Dallas talent just moves out of Dallas to more prosperous opportunities like California or New York or Tennessee or anywhere but here. Most of them leave before this city drives them crazy. I wouldn't blame Carter's psychotic behavior on drugs or the lack thereof.

I blame Dallas. This place is nuts.
