Those sewers look more inviting than my apartment.

The triumph of whimsy! Very nice.

For a moment there, I thought this post would be about manhole covers, which would bring up the inevitable discussion of why manhole covers are round. Some clever person would answer that they are round because that shape won't fall into the manhole. But then some other clever person would point out that there are other curves of constant width that would fulfill the same criterion, most notably Reuleaux polygons, such as the eleven sided Canadian dollar or "Loonie". An allusion to Martin Gardner would occur. But then someone would post a link to a website that trumps them all, a real world study that shows that many service entrance covers are not round at all, and come in a variety of prosaic rectangles, triangles, and ovals...

I'm glad that didn't happen. ;)

My community recently sponsored a program where the kids painted graphics on the sewer drains to discourage littering and chemical-pollution. While their efforts were very creative, I wish they'd had these pictures as inspiration.

Unfortunately Flickr is blocked at work, but I appriciate Tube's succint summary of the whole manhole cover discussion. Bookmarked for future reference! :)

Although, I should point out that in Tokyo the manhole covers are decorative. They feature bias relief imagery of various stuff, mostly plants and birds.

Though I think the images here are cooler.

You would get arrested for doing that in the US. What a shame.

Those are cool, creative, and fun.

Though to be pedantic, I believe those are storm drains. Of course, having never been to Brazil, perhaps that's how they do sewers.

Just to further Eekacat's pedantic antics, it's not Sao Paolo, it's São Paulo.

Oops. But they're still pretty cool pieces of street art.
