Salacious Selebrity [sic] Sleazesheet's Server Solicitations. Popbitch is great. It's the outlet for all the stuff that tabloid hacks can't get past their legal teams. Madonna likes it. It's a victim of its success. It needs a dedicated server. Déjà vu all over again, but heh, it's a worthy cause.

I'd donate (I also love popbitch, and I answered pyra/metafilter donation questions with someone there), but how in the heck do those bizarre wire/net transfers work? I suppose I'll break down and write a check.

Ah ah, a "cheque". ;)

mathowie: it's pretty easy to transfer money directly between UK bank accounts, as long as you have an account number and the branch sort code. (For some reason, the US banking system always feels 20 years behind the UK's whenever I need to deal with it.)

The popbitch account is with HSBC, which is useful, as they have an internal clearing system worldwide (they even has a branch in SF) and you might be able to make a direct deposit. If not, most UK banks let you pool dollar "checks" and pay a single fee of about £5 for the transaction.

(Guess who's spent the past two years dealing with this?)

Popbitch is eeeeeevil. God, I can't live without it. Where can I pay?

Holgate, which banks allow you to pay a single fee? I thought it was a percentage...

Popbitch really should get their act together... they would earn a lot more money if they made it easier for people to donate. I'm more likely to hand over cash if I can do it via Fairtunes.com, Paypal or even the Amazon Honor System...

HSBC, definitely. NatWest, definitely. (I bank with NatWest: they charge £10 per transaction for a total value of less than £1000, so I just collected my cheques over a few months and paid them in en masse.) The rest, dunno. There's lots of stuff on the web about handling dollar cheques, if you look for it.

And Paypal's not really that useful for UK-UK transactions: since funds are held in dollars, they take their fairly extortionate commission rate twice, from the sender and the recipient: at 2.6% of the amount plus $0.30, that's a fair wodge.

Someone should just donate Popbitch the use of a merchant server for a couple of weeks.
