You can't do that on television!

Rolling Stone's 25 most outrageous music videos. Outrageous apparently includes the sacrilegious, the dirty, the disturbing, and, um, Christopher Walken. Some videos may be not safe for work and one contains David Hasselhoff.

That's it.

I'm boycotting all fucking lists that can't put all the entries on one or two pages.

Someone tell me if the Broken video is on there so I know whether to be (more) outraged or not.

Hey, can somebody give me the list so that I don't have to do a bunch of clicking?

I was thinking the same thing at first, but all of the videos are available on the print page.

No outrageous video list is complete without aphex twin's window lic..... oh nevermind.

Sorry, meant for the first link to be to the print page - thanks, Poolio. Could one of the admins change the first link to prevent more complaints about the format, so people can go on to complain about the video selection?
posted by blahblahblah at 8:29 PM on September 27, 2007

Hey, I complained about both!

Not much of an outrageous list if Dominic Hailstone's "The Eel" is not included.

Too much NIN, not enough Freddie.

Rolling Stone has to post YouTube vids? Ferchrissakes, was this an intern project!?!?
posted by spec80 at 8:42 PM on September 27, 2007

I mean this in all seriousness, but does anyone even care about making music videos today? Besides the occasional BET & CMT countdown, I honestly can't remember the last music video I saw on TV. Granted my other options are MTV and VH1 with basic cable, but they don't show anything.
Really, are music videos relevant anymore??

Freddie = Frankie (when it's past my bedtime - the uploader made the same mistake.)
posted by imposster at 8:45 PM on September 27, 2007

Does the word "outrageous" have another meaning I'm not aware of?
posted by Falconetti at 8:49 PM on September 27, 2007

First, I'm really surprised that I've never seen that Frankie video before, back in the day that song was huge. Second, that is a kick ass video.

Good question, Falconetti. What on Earth is so outrageous about Michael Jackson's "Thriller" or "Black or White" (unless it's the extended car-smashing version, but still...)? What about Queen dressing in drag for "I Want to Break Free"? Supposedly this is the video that quashed their popularity in the US for many years.

That Pagan Poetry video was pretty good; I'd never seen it (or Bjork's nipples) before. So, I'm not going to bitch too much about the list.

They got both the Marilyn Manson videos they needed (I didn't think "Heart-Shaped Glasses" would get in because it's so recent, serious props for not being dissuaded by how new it is), as well as the Tool and Prodigy. A little more than NIN than necessary. I can't speak for any of the 80s stuff, but the 90s/00s coverage is pretty much perfect.

Regarding "The Eel", that page says no computer graphics were used but under crew it doesn't say who did the models or puppets.

Heh. The jay-Z video was removed for a 'terms of use violation'. I like that Rolling Stone just went out and linked to videos posted by random people.

Add N To X's Plug Me In wins wins wins!

No, their Metal Fingers In My Body is better! For one thing, it's funny. For another thing, it's got a cute robot! For the third thing, it's simply a much better song! For the fourth thing, it's got a shitload of noisy feedback.

I also kind of wondered just how 'outrageous' these videos are. Outrageously pompous would be more like it. I wonder why MTV couldn't at least have used iFilm, or whatever it's called these days.

Also, why no Girls on Film?

Oriole Adams writes "What about Queen dressing in drag for 'I Want to Break Free'? Supposedly this is the video that quashed their popularity in the US for many years."

I suppose that might be true, but to me that song always represented the worst of Queen, along with "Radio Ga-Ga" on the same album, like a stale stab at the '80s sound (and they were far from the only band to fall victim to that sucky trend).

Glad to see the Replacements, and really, that fatboy slim video deserves it. Having grown from my late teens on with music videos, I think the whole Micheal Jackson thing is what killed music videos. He's the one that started the whole need a director thing for videos. The ones I really love are just a band doing their thing and being creative. FGTH brings back memories, and really, Body Double was just an extended version of their music video.

What was the creepy film clip, it had the dude from radiohead singing, and this obviously homeless guy was wandering along, talking to himself and punching the air, and he kept getting hit by cars. That creeped me out, seriously (the Aphex Twin one did too).

Rabbit in your headlights by Unkle, Thom Yorke singing. Has ranked high in lists of "best" videos.

Right, so Rolling Stone can't actually host it's own content. Fucking awesome. Just because you can use YouTube doesn't mean you should outsource stuff you're using as a key part of a feature.

Yes. They made one that is about a love story. Pretty uplifting compared to the others.

My dad had MTV when it first started, and I remember seeing "Whip It" quite regularly.

It never struck me as particularly provocative (having grown up on a steady diet of adventure stories and Indiana Jones and other things where whips were used to tame lions and perform circus tricks and saving yourself from crumbling South American temples, and, besides, the song wasn't about actual whippings...), until one evening when I was around 13.

We had spent the weekend at my dad's house, and watched his collection of Devo videos. If anything particularly disturbed me about them, it was when Booji Boy's head got crushed in the press, but even that wasn't that awful.

However, my mother pulled me into the kitchen, looked at me firmly and said "Your sister's been telling me about stuff you've been watching at your dad's."

We had been watching a lot of TV. "Yeah?"

"Yeah. Something about a lady having her clothes whipped off?"

"Oh, yeah, the Devo videos."

"And was that what happened?"

"Yeah, but it wasn't, like, dirty or anything..."

So now I see "Whip It" listed as an "outrageous" music video, and I'm twelve all over again, convincing my mother.

This list is terrible. It's like the work of someone who listened to music in the 80s and only braved the modern music world a couple of times since then... kind of like Rolling Stone, I guess.

jmd82 makes a great point, although indirectly: Nobody watches music videos any more, but it's because they're not played any where (except the internet). Which is a shame, because it's one of the more effective, inventive and emotional art forms around.
